Thirteen Thursday: It’s For You
1. When the phone rang first thing Sunday morning, I sleepily said to my husband Joe, “It’s the front desk calling to wake us up.”
2. Joe and I hiked Buffalo Mountain, Floyd’s highest peak, today. To borrow (and adapt) a tag-line from Primland (a nearby eco-friendly Resort I’ve been writing about), “It was 4,000 feet above average.
3. ‘Dear Abby, How can I get rid of freckles?’ was my first published piece at the age of 11. A few years ago, I, unbelievably, met a woman who remembers reading that letter.
4. The answer had something to do with lemons.
5. I’ve been carrying around my grandson’s play cell phone (pictured above) just to freak people out.
6. Last week I met a writer who coined the word Beatlemania.
7. Why did the Russians ban an appliance found in 90% of American homes? That answer is HERE.
8. Since my dad passed away in 2005, I suppose I’ll be singing THIS song, written by my friend Kari Kovick, on Father’s Day. It’s been stuck in my head since I heard her perform last Friday HERE.
9. I’ve been thinking that slumbering would make a good mutant plural for lumbering and that stumbler could be a plural for tumbler.
10. “Back in the day, we became writers through the laying on of hands. Some teacher who we worshipped touched our shoulder, and this benediction saw us through a hundred defeats. And then an editor smiled on us and wrote us a check, and our babies got shoes.” More from Garrison Keillor on “When Everyone is a Writer, No One Is” HERE.
11. Famous authors who self-published and/or were rejected many times HERE.
12. I’m bored with my latest answering machine message but haven’t decided on a new one yet. Some ideas I’ve come up with in the last hour are: After the tea kettle whistle, pour out your heart; Say your piece after the bleeping beep; Hello this is Colleen. You’re on the air.
13. Or how about this: Leave your favorite answering machine message after the beep.
Dial up the Thirteen Thursday headquarters HERE.

Another wonderful and entertaining list. Your life is Karma with the people you meet who crossed your past. Are we going to see photos of the Buffalo mountain hike? How long did it take?
May 27th, 2010 6:49 am
I guess I should have written your life is Karmic…I NEED an editor.
May 27th, 2010 9:07 am
Yes, photos of the hike will be coming. I’m guessing it was a mile or more and took an hour or more, well worth it and only my third time up there since living here!

Interesting thing about the microwave. Also never knew anyone who was actually in an Ann Landers column!
I bought a new phone to mount on the wall in the kitchen and after I hooked it up realized the receiver won’t stay on the body of the machine; it just slides off. I am taking it back today.

Great TT! Looking forward to continue reading yours in the future! 🙂

LOL – I’m very boring with my messages. It’s after the beep for me as well.
My sister has just purchased a phone with big numbers so my father doesn’t have to squint any more or ring the wrong number.
May 27th, 2010 4:20 pm
I am willing to give up so many things that are bad for me, but not my microwave!
May 27th, 2010 5:04 pm
Someone remembered the letter? Too funny!
Have a great day!

Carrying a play cellphone?!!! I love it!!! You go girl.
I stopped reading Grisham after The Chamber came out…seems they all felt the same…just the names were changed. But I DID love A Time to Kill AND the Client. That book, the Client, I read in ONE day it was that good.
Mine is HERE if you’d like to make time to visit with me!!

Interesting T-13. I enjoyed the writer’s theme you threaded throughout your list.
