The Grand Opening of Floyd’s Farmers Market

Downtown visitors took time to smell the flowers and sample locally grown produce at the Farmers Market Grand Opening on Saturday, May 29th. Market vendor Tree Gigante’s booth of cut perennials drew admirers. Musician Bernie Coveney (shown in the background) provided music for the event.
At the first of what is hoped by many to be a local tradition, the Market enjoyed a steady flow of foot traffic. The weather was sunny and warm and the overall mood was upbeat. The Market is scheduled to be held throughout the growing season under the Floyd Community Pavilion from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday.
The Farmers Market and the Artisan Market on Friday are managed by SustainFloyd. Here, SustainFloyd director Mike Burton (center) talks with Jimmy Connor, a representative of Floyd’s Farm Bureau. The Farm Bureau sponsored the Market’s Grand Opening and had an information table at the event. Burton said he was impressed with the strong show of support and attendance.
Providing a playful atmosphere, hoop crafters and performers Becca Obert (center) and John Imbur (in the far background) piqued the curiosity of children of all ages. The Blacksburg couple said they were first introduced to hooping at Floydfest 3 years ago.
The aroma of fresh baked cookies and other treats drew a line of people at the Blue Mountain School booth. The independent school was the first in what will be a Community Market mainstay of hosting a different non-profit group each weekend.
Face painter Uriel Yard puts the finishing touches on young girl’s face design.
Locally grown early cherries were a popular Market item.
Mark Bignell, Jean Bignell, and their dog Carlitos left the Market with potted herbs and bags of fresh fruit. The Bignells said they are future Floyd residents who plan to relocate to the county as retirees.

How lovely!! I love farmers markets!! There are a couple in my neighborhood in Manhattan every weekend. We always like to walk to them. It’s always so nice to know the money we spend is going straight to the people who produce the goods.
