Planet Beach
Between the gusting wind, the sudsy surf balls scattering like tumbleweed, the drop-off dune incline down to the shore on one side, and the in-and-out of crashing of surf on the other, Joe and I were nearly bowled over at the beach on Assateague Island National Seashore.
Landing from the 6 hour drive from the mountains, I felt like an astronaut relearning gravity. We held hands as we toured the sand castles along the beach just as the late afternoon tide was beginning to wash them away.
We saw some of the wild ponies that Assateague is famous for from the road as we made our way up to the red stripped lighthouse for the tail end of sunset.
The next day we got on the beach early. I set my chair up by the shore to watch the surfers. I saw one in blue shorts and another with a blue face (some kind of surfer sun screen). He didn’t know that in ancient times Celts went into battle naked and painted blue.
By afternoon beach real estate was hard to come by and I said to Joe, “it isn’t summer till I’ve taken a nap on the beach.”
Later, I walked down to the less populated side of the beach and came across what appeared from the distance to be a money tree. But everyone knows that money doesn’t grow on trees. This tree was laden with seashells.
On our way back to the motel we stopped to photograph a group of snowy egrets feeding and roosting. Their reflections made us see double. How many egrets do you see HERE?
