Pull Up a Chair
1. You can see two lighthouses from the beach where my mother lives and the sky in late afternoon is as pink as a baby’s nursery.
2. The sign at the beach pathway entrance says ‘these dunes aren’t made for walking,’ and I can’t read it without thinking of the old Nancy Sinatra song ‘these boots are made for walking’ and then singing to myself ‘one of these days these dunes are going to walk all over you.”
3. One of the sweetest compliments my son Josh has given me happened when he was about 12 when he said, “Mom you act just like Gidget,” (the Sally Fields version of the enthusiastic beach girl, of course).
4. One of my sixteen word memoirs is: Gidget goes Woodstock; ends up country.
5. I just want to complain for the record that I’m mad that the first TV show that I’ve loved and watched religiously since West Wing is being cancelled. The show, Awake, is about a cop living two separate realities, one in which his son died in a car accident and his wife survived and the other in which his wife died in a car accident and his son survived. He has two shrinks who give him Jungian advice and dissect his “dreams,” and he solves cases in one reality with information learned from the other as the two realities bleed over into each other.
6. I zig zag when I walk the beach like I plant corn.
7. People walking the beach don’t organize themselves like they do on the road when driving, or when they’re swimming laps in a pool, which is part of the reason I like to do it. There are no up and down lanes or one-way rules to follow. Some people walk determinedly, while others seem to wander. Read more of my Nantasket in November post HERE.
8. Sometimes when I’m walking the beach I walk in other people’s footprints or leave my own footprints in strange circling patterns for someone else to ponder.
9. Antibiotics aren’t what they used to be. Fluoroquinolone antibiotics have been associated with serious and detrimental effects on the musculoskeletal system, cardiovascular system, central nervous system and peripheral nervous system, circulatory system, maxillofacial system, endocrine system, gastrointestinal system, urological system, the liver, the brain, the skin, and the sensory systems; hearing, sight, taste, touch, and smell, as well as a significant number of fatalities. Read more HERE.
9. I took a day off from caring for my mom to go out on a sailboat with my sister Sherry and her husband on Saturday, but the tide was low and there was not much wind, so we went to Plymouth instead, stopping first at Billington Sea ((above photo), a fresh water pond and beach dream from the past that I hadn’t seen since I was a little girl and we spent the day there with a large group of family members.
10. Billington Sea was named after its discoverer, Francis Billington, one of the passengers on the Mayflower who sighted the pond from a tree in January 1621. He had climbed the tree and, seeing a body of water, had the idea that he had found the “great South Sea” or the Pacific Ocean. In memory of his error, the pond has been called “Billington’s Sea” since.
11. Since I’ve been in Massachusetts, I’ve met two of my great nieces for the first time and got a firedog bobble head named after me by my great nephew Joshua.
13. Some say life is a beach and others say it’s a bowl of cherries, but I think life is a field expedition of which I’m always taking notes, even if it is done by talking into my camera video.

I love being near water, and the ocean is no exception–not that I’ve seen it all that often, being as landlocked as I am. Good thing there are a lot of lakes in this city!
Love the photo in the post below this one!

As always, my dear Colleen, a rich and varied T13 with rather a Water Theme….It’s good that you are getting some time on the Beach and with your sister Sherry, too…..Hugs to your Mom, my dear…Though I have never met her, I feel like I know her somewhat, through you and your blog…!
“AWAKE”…I just couldn’t get into it….It was too confusing for me—perhaps I am getting simple-minded in my dottage…! I love that actor! Jason Issacs? (That’s right, isn’t it?)
I was just reading that CBS is no longer going to do anymore Jess Stone films with Tom Selleck, because though this last one had a HUGE Audience of around 14 mill. the demographic was “old people”….HELP!!! Sometimes I feel the so called powers that be in TV are truly stupid!!!! I guess people over 50 don’t matter to these people……Talk about wrong thinking and short sightedness—People are living longer and longer—If they had any brains they would realize that 14 mill of any age says a lot about what certain people want to watch…..! It would be interesting to know what the demographic was for “AWAKE”…!

There’s nothing nicer than walking on the beach and leaving footprints in the sand. The fresh sea air and the soothing sound of the water. Heaven!

Another fun walk down your beach of 13 dunes. Hope your visit with your mom is peaceful. I did not watch Awake, but I watch too many TV shows as it is. I set aside two hours most nights for a movie or a favorite series and daytimes at breakfast it is the news. Too much TV, but I am a story person and do like the real fictional stories the TV tells…and sells.

I hope you’re having a good visit. I am sorry they are canceling your show. It is hard for me to get into a TV show anymore because you never know when they will take it away. Thanks for the information on antibiotics, too.

Beachside, lovely tide. Been beside one myself recently. Good to meander.

That is cool about Billington Sea! I didn’t know that and it was cool going there with you.

so lucky to have a bobble head firedog named after you! Maybe I’ll get one one day too, if i’m a very very good girlie and eat all my veggies.
“How ’bout getting off these antibiotics…” Alanis had it right, what 15 years ago?
Beach dreams of yore. beaches today, no swimming lanes, or traffic lanes. Maybe shady lanes here and there — heaven!
I have never seen Gidget, I should check out a Youtube. Likewise for Awake — which sounds absolutely fabulous!! In a weird way, of course.
Hope the dunes don’t get to walkin’ all over you, could end up with a sand in every nook and cranny. 🙂 Or is that every crook and nanny? I do get all those mixed up.
xoxo
