When You’re Gone
Maybe when your gone
my apron will turn up
It’s been lost since
you took the kitchen apart
and put in new countertops
Maybe when your gone
I’ll dream of being lost
I’ll drink wine right out of the bottle
go to the wrong dentist
and get tired of playing Scrabble
Maybe I’ll buy myself flowers
like Miley Cyrus did
or write poems
about old boyfriends
like Taylor Swift
Maybe I’ll think
it will always be like this
and when your packing
I’ll stay busy writing
When your gone
I’ll talk to myself
I’ll watch the view
and make long lists
of things I could do
But maybe I’ll make plans
only to break them
I’ll put my passwords
in a lock box
and give my thrift shop clothes
to thrift shops
I’ll grow out my bangs
and buy a new bathrobe
I’ll leave my phone
far from home
call it from the land line
and see who picks up

Some very interesting maybes here! And the hinted back story intriguing, revealed just enough.

A very interesting list – I think wine straight out of the bottle is a good way to get the old boyfriend poem flowing!

Will day-to-day stay the same; how will life become different? I could feel the emptiness of the last line.

Sounds like a plan not to make any plans… I do receommend buying flowers for yourself but don’t drink wine from the bottle.

I love the idea of leaving the phone somewhere and ringing from a landline.
I also sensed a freedom that arises after getting out of a stifling relationship.

Colleen, it sounds to me like she is building up a callous of maybes to help cushion the pain. Even if a parting is in the partners’ best interests, it still HURTS LIKE HELL.
The repeating lines work so well here <3

I love the opening lines. All of it’s good but they ticked me.

Your poem inspired me along with a prompt of ‘One Day’
