Winter Tax Refunded in Spring
This (preparing my tax return) is too difficult for a mathematician. It takes a philosopher. ~Albert Einstein
The Audit
In April I calculate poetry
the way others do their taxes
as though the world was overdue
for a good accounting
Bursting to put into words
what the birds already know
with each emerging daffodil
I mark spring’s growing windfall
Its affluent bloom
and excess of green
are annual assets
we all get to claim

I would’ve never thought to relate Spring and taxes in such a light…ingenious!

Now that is cute.
My dad was an accountant,
I got a bachelor’s in math,
I am a poet,
and I love Einstein and his quips.
∴ this poem ℝy speaks 2 me.
Awesome!

Assets we get to claim! Marvelous, Colleen. I love, also, “Bursting to put into words
what the birds already know…”
We have a tax extension, so our tax month is going trickle into May, when April’s song will be in high chorus. Oh boy! (I avoid all things accounting, but this poem I’d happily read again and again.) 🙂
