Blue Law on the Blue Ridge
AKA: Sunday is Optional
When I was growing up Catholic, we couldn’t eat meat on Fridays. Girls wore hats to church and the mass was still done in Latin. During Lent, we gave up candy and other sweets. No one shopped on Sunday because all the stores were closed.
In the spirit of the colonial New England blue laws, I’m going to give up posting on Sundays (or at the very least make it optional). This isn’t like a new year’s resolution or something I’m giving up for lent; it’s just an experiment to see if I’ll like having one day blog-free day a week. My plan is to spend more time in the church of my choice on Sundays, which for me is…the great outdoors. Amen!

I like your thinking. When I was a kid, Sundays were quiet days. No one drove. The only place that was open was the bakery, and my parents would give us a few dollars and send us for a walk to pick up bagels (mmm, Montreal bagels) and salt sticks (which, like bagels, just aren’t the same outside of my hometown).
I remember the silence of the normally-busy streets, and I remember wondering where everyone went. It was as if the world was catching its breath.
We don’t have that anymore thanks to our 7/24 commercialized world. It would be nice to return to it. Your entry reminds us that it’s possible.
BTW, I’m here from Michele’s today. I should log off, too, and just enjoy the morning air.

Colleen, I remember Blue Laws too; no stores were open on Sunday, nearly everyone went to church and we rested – as we were supposed to do.
Re your comment about the fallen cake: The cake was probably delicious, as it smelled great – but alas, I didn’t get any of it!

I like this idea. Personally, I spend way to much time on my computer. I love it.. but sometimes wonder what I am missing.
P.S.
Thanks for the tag.. I am carrying on the meme 🙂

Making time for all aspects of life is so important. I’m glad you are doing this for yourself.

Yep, it is all about balance. Up time and down time. Of course, I say that I am working through insomnia at three in the morning and blogging!

Sounds like a plan. A change is as good as a vacation.
How’d it go?

What a beautiful and peaceful picture. I love keeping the Sabbath–setting aside a time every week for reflection and family. Thanks for the tag.
