Thirteen Thursday #3
1. I like the number 13.
2. There are 12 signs of the zodiac and 12 months to the year. But if we were using a lunar calendar (rather than a solar one) there would be 13 months in a year.
3. There were also 12 Knights of the Round Table and 12 Apostles to Jesus. But there were 13 in each group if you count King Arthur and Jesus.
4. I’ve lived in a one stoplight rural county for the past 20 years and haven’t gotten a single Halloween trick-or-treater the whole time I’ve lived there.
5. This Halloween, while in my hometown of Hull, Massachusetts to visit my dad in the hospital, we got about 30 trick-or-treaters at my mother’s house. I passed out the candy.
6. The most interesting costume I saw was a group one. About 8 girls came to the door in pajamas with pacifiers in their mouths. “Is this a pajama party,” I asked. “”Yes!” they all answered.
7. I relate more to pagans than I do to Romans like I relate more to slaves than to masters.
8. The word “pagan” comes from the Latin for “country dweller.”
9. One Halloween, I went to a costume dance party dressed all in black. I had a black mask completely covering my face and no one knew who I was. I even changed the way I danced so that no one would guess it was me. Half way through the night, I went to the bathroom and took of the black costume, revealing an all red costume underneath. I re-joined the party and imagined that everyone was wondering what happened to the person in black.
10. My mother lives next door to the Catholic Church that she goes to. Last night, the parking lot was packed with cars. It was All Souls Day, the Catholic version of Halloween, a day when the dead are remembered.
11. I took the subway into Boston yesterday. I used to meditate on the subway on the way to work years ago when I lived here. People probably thought I was sleeping.
12. After an evening walk on the beach, I asked my mother why the seaweed was stacked up 2 feet high along the beach. She said it was because they had recently had a couple of Nor’easters (translation: storm weather with wind that comes off the ocean).
13. I’ve been sitting in my dad’s living room chair (keeping it warm for him) and even using his remote. My sister, Trish, brought a remote into my dad’s hospital room for him to hold. He loves it, even if it doesn’t work on the hospital TV.
POSTNOTE: To learn more about 13 Thursday, to meet its founder, and to view a list of participants go visit Leanne at Artist by Nature.

I love your Thirteen Thursdays.
We didn’t get many trick or treaters this year … I was sorely disappointed. However, one threesome showed up (2 girls, 1 boy) dressed as “Three’s Company.” They were awesome!
Not sure how far your parent’s are from the aquarium in Boston, but have you ever considered bringing some of that seaweed there? They usually welcome it … they clean it up and use it in many exhibits and the fishies love it. Or at least, that’s what Mystic did.
So glad to see you’re hanging in there (and that your sense of humor is too!)

Number 13 on the list really hit home with me. I don’t know why, but it really tugged at my soul and made me teary-eyed.

Thursday Thirteen #12
Thirteen Things about Leanne, Thursday, November 3, 2005
My other Thirteens
1. My Godson Cole is two years old today! YAY! Happy Birthday, Cole! And also Happy Birthday to his mom, she’s the one who did all the work, he just showed …
November 3rd, 2005 12:43 pm
there are thirteen “moonths” in one year
that is 13 cylces of the moon waxing/waning as it’s cirling the earth for every circle the earth revolves around the sun
all the days of the week are named for “pagan” , that is traditional folk names for objects observed in the sky.
would that our connection to these natural cycles and objects were again known by the common everyday folks. too bad that the dreamspell of gregorian calendrics and the absurdity of 60 minute, 60 second slavery keeps so much of human kin out of the loop from the rythym o’ life on a daily basis.

Hi Colleen,
Wonderful 13, I learned something new with your #2 and #3! Thank you!
I’ve been thinking about your family, sending hugs to you all.

I like your ruminations on the number 13.
Thanks also for the link to the parent co-operative school. That was really neat!
Take care.

wow, you’ve put included things in here i’ve never even thought about, but now that i’ve read it, it makes so much sense. i’ve never thought of 13 as an unlucky number, i wonder how the whole thing started?
anyway, i’m playing this week too

I lost my Dad 6 years ago. When I am visiting my Mom, I often sit in his chair and push it back into the reclining position that he used to like. Somehow this brings me peace.
My favourite number is 6. Don’t know why.. I have heard that it has evil connotations.. but I don’t believe it is evil for me.. I just like it.

Thursday Thirteen
I’m giving this Thursday Thirteen a try because Leanne is making me do it. I’m not normally a ‘meme’ type of person – that type of stuff requires waaaay too much comittment on my part. Kind of like the same reason I don&#…

What a great idea for a costume. Did anyone ever figure out it was you? Before the big reveal that is.
Hope your dad is doing ok.

Everytime I come here I learn something cool.
November 4th, 2005 12:47 am
This was fun. I love your thirteen especially #3 and #13.
I didn’t get any trick or treaters this year. The neighborhood is growing up.
November 4th, 2005 2:02 am
#11: There’s a wonderful photography book called The Face of Prayer (it’s half-buried or I’d give the bibliographic info) — with a shot of a man meditating on a bench in a NYC subway station. The subway’s been a great meditation place for me, too.
Wonderful that Trish brought a remote to your dad. A reminder of home even if it doesn’t work in the hospital.

Great 13, Colleen! I’ve seen other blogger’s do the Thursday 13, but never realized that this weekly event was founded by Leanne. I haven’t visited her in a while, but she was once a favorite blog of mine. Thank you for reminding me of her.
By the way, I’m returning your visit from a while ago when you stopped by from Michele’s. Glad I did. It was a great way to start my morning.
November 4th, 2005 8:50 am
I love reading these.
I think we would be better off if we had 13 months. That would seem more natural, no?
November 4th, 2005 12:28 pm
hello via Michele!
i used to live in Hull… near the village! i loved waking up and smelling the ocean and driving past all the boats on my way to work!
November 4th, 2005 1:03 pm
lots of trick or treaters this year, but no really cool costumes. in an effort to keep my dog quiet, I sat by the window and opened the door before they rang the bell…got to watch a bunch of kids cutting threw the spiderwebs I put up to keep them from cutting threw there! I shudda put that on my 13 http://lillyput.blogspot.com/ huh? Oh well. You get to learn something about me that no one else did.
Hope your Dad is doing better soon and keep that chair warm for him…he’ll appreciate that.

Nice post, I like 13s too. I was born on the 26th, so that is 13 x 2 the way I see it.
November 7th, 2005 10:15 am
We are 13 people too. Bob is born on the 13th, and so was Johnny. We also like 5.

Rose, my computer just crashed so I’m using my laptop but I lost all my files and addresses. Email me when you get a chance so that I can get your address anew. Can you beleive that planes don’t have seat number or gate number 13?!!
