13 Thursday: The Flip Side
1. I once had a bumper sticker on my car that I hung upside down. It read “Why Be Normal?”
2. I also had a recycling bumper sticker that I stuck on my car twice. It said “Once is Not Enough.”
3. Speaking of normal and not being so, my sister Kathy recently had a lot of trouble with her blog; first with posting and then with accepting comments. I empathize with her because I know when my blog isn’t working right I don’t feel right. It’s as if my car is broke down, and I can’t go anywhere.
4. One of my close women friends is 20 years younger than me (Mara). Another is 20 years older (Alwyn).
5. Alwyn has had a rich life, living in Greece, Italy, England, and even Floyd at one time. She’s a Waldorf Kindergarten teacher and environmental activist who, in the past, was an assistant editor of Mademoiselle and interviewed Margaret Meade (before she was well known) for a book. We were having lunch together last week, and my husband, Joe joined us. Joe and I were both asking her questions and after a while she noticed I was writing everything down. “This is an Interview; isn’t it!?” she, who is leery about self-promotion, asked. “I think it’s about time I get the details and timeline of your story down,” I told her. (To be continued…)
6. It’s amazing to me how much background information you have to collect to be able to write 2 sentences.
7. I’m attracted to clothes, but I’m also fickle about them. I’m always looking for a few good mix and match pieces that I can have a long term relationship, but once I wear them a few times, I get bored with them.
8. My husband once covered himself in bubble wrap for a Halloween Costume. “Oh, it’s just a ploy to get all the women to touch you,” I told him.
9. Popping bubble wrap is a weakness of mine. You can pop some virtual bubble wrap HERE.
8. My stove is old. Sometimes one of the burners hums and sounds like a faraway foghorn, making me homesick for Hull, Massachusetts, the small peninsula beach town I grew up in.
10. Look what happened to Terri’s house in Cedar Keys when she went to Boston for a week.
11. I recently watched the movie “Broken Flowers” because Bill Murray was in it. It was so slow (long driving scenes with jazz playing in the back ground) that I literally watched it in fast forward.
12. I spent more than a couple of hours over the weekend deleting nasty spam comments that had infested some of my old posts. Doing so made me feel like I was killing the cockroaches that came out at night in an old trailer I once lived in near Houston.
13. While going back to each post to see if they were infected or not, I re-read all the comments I got after my father had died in a post called “The Last Sunset.” 46 of you offered your condolences. Thank you. It meant a lot.
Thursday headquarters is here. My other 13’s are here.

Oh I adore bubble wrap – it is a serious weakness!
Your friend sounds so interesting.
I played too

Oh, I am so stealing the bubble wrap costume for this year!
Aren’t you glad it’s stopped raining? Did you get much flooding where you are? Rt. 29 was closed in a few places on Monday. Ugh.

Bubble-wrap on-line, thanks for the link! another addiction… a friend of mine keeps telling me “we only live once”… I love the up-side down house! which reminds me of my desk. Spam comments are a nightmare. Happy TT!

#5. What interesting stories Alwyn must have! I hope you’ll share some with us.
#9: My mother loved to do that, too! (drove me crazy, it did)
June 29th, 2006 10:48 am
Bubble wrap! I love it!!
June 29th, 2006 10:52 am
Gonna have to be unoriginal and thank you for the bubble wrap link. 🙂
Too funny!
Happy TT!

Bubble wrap is fun to walk on, too. Don’t wear shoes.
June 29th, 2006 11:06 am
Really look forward to hearing more about your friend. She sounds very interesting.
Can understand about that homesick feeling for those fog horns…I remember them well from Salem.
Thanks for the mention, Colleen….and again, Happy Anniversary today. Enjoy!
June 29th, 2006 11:12 am
You do realize I can now be in no way expected to get one minute of work done today. Not when there is virtual bubble wrap to be popped!
June 29th, 2006 11:41 am
Spammers = cockroaches…
That is so true.
My 13 is up.
June 29th, 2006 12:01 pm
12.We had an old rickety apartment in Dallas with those nasty things. I sprayed and sprayed. One night I attacked under the fridge and they came pouring out, an army, some the size of small horses. Much stomping (with shoes on) ensued but we finally got the upper hand (foot). Unfortunately, they are a hardy breed so when they regrouped and amassed another army, we moved.
11. This is why I rarely go to movies. (Also the cost is outrageous and I just don’t care to make rich actors, richer.) Videos are much easier to fast forward.

I think it’s important to have cross-generational friends. They bring a rich understanding to your life that you may not have through your own experiences.
Thanks for stopping by!

Great list – #1 and #2 made me laugh … that’s something I would do- put the bumper sticker on upside down but in my case it would probably be accidental. 🙂
June 29th, 2006 2:18 pm
I think its great to have much older and younger friends. You can often learn alot and teach alot as well. LOVE THAT BUBBLE WRAP! Thanks for sharing
June 29th, 2006 3:21 pm
What cool friends you have! And I love bubble wrap and popping it, but I’m not sure I’d want my husband going out in JUST bubble wrap for a party, I sure hope he was well dressed otherwise. 🙂
Have a wonderful day, I played too…
June 29th, 2006 3:32 pm
Wonderful list and I love how you added what they made yo think of. I like the spam = cockroaches. Works for me!
Thanks for visiting my T13 today! Hope you are having a Terrific Thursday!
June 29th, 2006 3:45 pm
What the heck is so intriguing about bubble wrap? I love popping it too and so do my grandchildren. They can entertain themselves for hours, as long as the bubble wrap lasts…LOL

I was in a deep depression last week over messing up my template beyond repair and having to relaunch it. Thankfully I saved all my back posts, but it still got to me. I got my first spam last week on my blog–I have word verification and still got one. No fun! Enjoy bubble wrap too! My list is up!
June 29th, 2006 6:17 pm
What a great idea about “Broken Flowers”! I wish I had thought of that because I watched it at regular speed. Yawn! Thanks for visiting my TT!
June 29th, 2006 6:22 pm
What an awesome list. I know what you mean about content needed to put two sentences together, argh! Thanks for the bubble wrap link, I’m having so much fun with it. What a stress reliever.
Toodles,
Maryanne

Thanks for stopping by mine! SIL–sister in law, I don’t generally used initials, but typing in sister-in-law takes too long!
June 29th, 2006 7:02 pm
Bubble Wrap is the bomb! Who can resist?
June 29th, 2006 9:51 pm
Great, It wasn’t just me on the “Broken Flowers”. I thought he was taking the “Lost In Translation” bit a “bit” too far…
June 30th, 2006 12:32 am
Happy anniversary! Those pictures are gorgeous. Our main packing material fetish here is Styrofoam, which our cat Red loves to chew into tiny little pieces. We try to remove temptation….
June 30th, 2006 5:51 am
LOVE that Bubble Wrap stuff! Fun to do that, isn’t it?
I didn’t get “Broken Flowers” at all…it was as you said, Sooooo Sllloooowwww. And I don’t mind slow if I am interested and engaged…I just got bored.
I just love your TT’s Colleen…Something about these TT’s of yours cover so much and such interesting things…any one of the 13 could encompass a whole entire post or two or three, in and of themselves. Always a joy to visit you, my dear.

Commenting on number 3 where you wrote:
Speaking of normal and not being so, my sister Kathy recently had a lot of trouble with her blog; first with posting and then with accepting comments. I empathize with her because I know when my blog isn’t working right I don’t feel right. It’s as if my car is broke down, and I can’t go anywhere.
Yup, I’m still having trouble at my blog place. I can not reply back to comments made by others (not that I get many). Tripod, the host of my blog has been doing some “advanced customization” which for me means a blog that changes its look daily – with the sidebar sometimes appearing at top- and an inability to use the reply feature. Others who use Tripod are also experiencing this same trouble and others are not. My daughter Chrissie has not noticed a thing.
And then # 9. Popping bubble wrap is a weakness of mine. You can pop some virtual bubble wrap HERE.
I posted about the bubble wrap too on Tuesday.
Something I didn’t say and neither did you was that it feels more real when you click the “manic mode.”

I loved the bumper sticker stories. Be blessed today.
June 30th, 2006 4:19 pm
6, 8 and 12 are such endearing remarks.
I am so glad whenever I come here.
June 30th, 2006 6:28 pm
Bubble wrap is, quite literally, my ultimate weakness. Allow me to sigh with happiness as I contemplate the precious link you included in this entry. May you be forever blessed for this 🙂

I so enjoy your 13 Thursday. I often wish I had your gift with words.
