Summer Slug
My ambition rises
in a sluggish summer day
to the number of
squash bugs
in my garden
Death by squish
is not for the squeamish
but I’m the mother of butternut
Out of my way!

The baby butternuts are only about 3 inches long right now, but the squash bugs are just starting to appear. I like to grow them becasue they are one of the few vegetables that (when stored right) can last until the following spring or summer!

Don’t forget to freeze your tomatoes this year. I’m still using mine from last year.
When ripe, I put the tomatoes in a freezer bag whole. They freeze up like big round, hard marbles. When I make sauce, for example, take one or two or however many I want to use out of the freezer bag, run them under cold water so that the skin peels off (in seconds!) I then let them thaw just enough to be cutable or I put it in whole. I proceed making my sauce as usual.
Give it a try.

I put in a few of the flat white pan squash. Lots of blooms but no squash yet. Mom and I have been picking a couple of little cucumbers a day for supper. She doesn’t like them to get too long and likes the seeds small. By the looks of things, we might have to start eating them for breakfast and snacks too.

Death by Squish is more humane than death by drowning, and you must protect your butternuts! (Is it just me or did that last part sound a little wrong?)

Anyone who can grow edible things is incredibly talented, in my book. I turn green things brown, so I will live vicariously through your garden exploits.
Yum!
