13 Thursday Stranger than Fiction
1. I love THIS video, found at Kimmy and Jacob’s. Do you think the idea will take hold? I want pink pants just like those.
2. I bet you can read this: Aoccdrnig to rscheearch at an Elingsh uinervtisy, it deosn’t mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer are in the rghit pclae. The rset can be a
toatl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit a porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae we do not raed ervey lteter by it slef but the wrod as a wlohe and the biran fguiers it out aynawy.
3. Deana posted a link to a story about a woman who crashed while trying to teach her dog how to drive, which reminded me of this photo.
4. When my son Dylan was a teenager, I once spotted him driving around town in his sports car with what I thought was a wild blonde woman up in the front seat next to him. It turned out his dog Jazzy (in the photo to the right).
5. The night after the Emmys, I had a dream about Naomi from “Here in the Hills.” There was a big blog convention in some unnamed city, but it was really more like a blog prom. I was excited to run into Naomi the day before, as she was checking into her room. I asked how it was she was out-and-about, considering her health issues, and she told me that she was well and that everything had cleared up. The rest of the dream was all about things being thwarted regarding my dress, hair, and make-up. The blog prom was a formal one, and I’m not big on formality.
6. I have a “Stranger than Fiction” category sidebar on my blog. Here’s something that came from it: My friend, Juniper, got two speeding tickets in one day. One of them got thrown out on a technicality. Her vanity license plate said SACRED, but the cop wrote SCARED on the ticket.
7. Author Tom Clancy said this: The difference between fiction and reality is that fiction has to make sense.
8. Yesterday I posted some photos of some round hay bales from around my neighborhood, prompting a reader, Amy F, to say this: Do you know that most farmers are deciding to stop using round bales? It’s because the cows aren’t getting a square meal! 🙂 (These things are what you hear when your sister is an agriculture teacher!)
9. What would you do if your blog completely disappeared?
10. My sister Kathy deleted her blog recently by mistake while trying to add a 13 Thursday page. I think it’s a flaw of her Tripod server that the “start new blog” option doesn’t say “delete old blog.” At first she was devastated to lose more than a year’s worth of writing that was not backed-up, but as it turned out many came to her aid; family members and mostly a Tripod community of bloggers. With their help she was able to retrieve most everything and her first new post on A Particularly Persistent Point of View – Take Two appeared last night. Go tell her hello. She’s been through a lot.
11. Deleting her blog may have been a blessing in disguise. Because of it she has found a number of new readers. One of them, Catinka Knoth made this insightful comment about blog readership: Whether you have no readers or not – you do not need to know because you never know WHEN you will have those readers. That is one of the points about putting things on paper – it is for another time or space. It is in effect like money – a means of conveying a value across time and space. It is not necessary for the here and now.
12. Does anyone know of a site that explains in simple steps how to post digital camera videos onto my blog?
13. You might think me morbid, but I’m completely fascinated by THIS site of famous last words, meaning things famous people said right before they died. Emily Dickinson said, “I must go, the fog is rising,” and Lou Costello said, “That was the best ice-cream soda I ever tasted.”
Thursday headquarters is here. My other 13’s are here.
August 31st, 2006 9:38 am
Woo-Hoo she’s is BACK! I will go give her some love.
I love that quote about blog readers. So cool.
Ha,HA, HA square meals….
August 31st, 2006 9:48 am
# 4 is hilarious!
Happy TT!
August 31st, 2006 10:05 am
It’s kindof disconcerting for one who loves words, as I do, to be able to read that garbled mess!! But a fun exercise.
Colleen, you commented lately that my life seemed to be very exciting. It was up to the late 50’s but the next 30 years are “iffy”. I’m having a really hard time trying to decide how to blog about it all. It is a mish-mosh of memories centered around a family, illnesses (diabetes and alcoholism)and just plain life. I plan to take it one day at a time…it is very cathartic to write what I remember.
August 31st, 2006 10:07 am
ugh i can’t imagine deleting my blog! horrendous. how stressful.
great 13 again darling.
August 31st, 2006 10:11 am
I had no problem at all reading #2! #s 6 & 7 cracked me up and #11 I enjoyed 🙂
Thanks for visiting today!
August 31st, 2006 10:13 am
You don’t like “One True Media”?…you can click off one of my videos to get there. Terri uses that one too. You would download your videos exactly like your pictures. They stay in the same file and you pick video clips from there.
Great 13! Love Jazz driving, the cow joke, the dream, the video….it’s all good!
August 31st, 2006 10:25 am
That OK Go video is very popular and I love it!!! your nr 4 is just hilarious and your nr 5 very cute. And I love your nr 7!!! I think a TT is a great way to ask technical questions, I’d love to know how to do that too! happy TT 🙂
August 31st, 2006 10:26 am
I’ll try One True Media and see if I can figure it out. It’s not like I have a video I’m dying to show but I want to know how for when I do.
Ginny, I love what your doing over at your blog…recording your memoirs and reviewing your life. It’s interesting to me what women did in the 50s when I was just crawling and playing.
August 31st, 2006 11:03 am
Thse are some strange things. I just read about someone who decided to pee on their seat on a plane. That was a hoot.
August 31st, 2006 11:08 am
Jennifer posted that video at her place the other day; it cracks me up. I would have killed myself if I’d tried to do any of those moves.
Excellent farm joke, by the way.
My TT is up, too.
August 31st, 2006 11:22 am
I saw that bit on the woman teaching her dog to drive and wondered where her brain had disappeared to. 😉
Have a happy.
August 31st, 2006 11:44 am
I thought I lost my blog recently, too. Sometimes when we lose everything, we create it stronger then it was before.
August 31st, 2006 12:19 pm
Teaching a dog to drive… riding around with a “wild blonde” and getting caught by your mom… two tickets in one day… Yup. I think that would turn “Sacred” into “Scared”.
Did you hear about the woman that was trapped in her minivan? Her van got caught up in flood waters, it started to sink, she couldn’t swim. It completely submerged and several wonderful people made every attempt to get her out of the van. One man finally felt her grab his arm. The second time he was able to pull her out of the van. When they pulled the van out of the water… no window was open. That’s my favorite news story this week. I think we all needed a wonderful story!
I love the round bales of hay/square meal comment. I’ll have to remember that when we pass bales of hay 😉
Glad you liked the OK go video. I love those pants, the pink shirt and white shoes 😉 They’re doing that routine LIVE on MTV’s music awards tonight… I can’t wait to see it “live”.
Happy T13! Thanks for stopping by!
August 31st, 2006 12:25 pm
Tom Clancy’s comment was so dead on. Sometimes life just seems like one Very Interesting book of fiction!
About the video, my first thought was YouTube or OneTrueMedia. I don’t have experience with either of these formats, however.
I have had blog posts disappear, but not the blog itself. I felt as if that was almost an invasion of privacy! 🙂
August 31st, 2006 12:37 pm
I just love #4 and 6.
#9: Oh, no, the ultimate nightmare of a lost blog! I would hope that my webhost had done backups like they should… I have some myself, but I really don’t know. Maybe I would start fresh in that case.
#12 Post videos: I don’t know much about it, but I’ve seen that many bloggers is using YouTube to post videos.
#13: No, you’re not morbid, just as crazy as I am 😉
August 31st, 2006 1:56 pm
Thanks for the meniton Colleen.
Yes I was devastated to say the least, but as Amy the Black says;
“Sometimes when we lose everything, we create it stronger then it was before.” This is my hope.
I tried to convey that same message on my the first entry at the new PPP of View Take Two.
Now all I have to do is get over there to get all my links in. It’s time consuming, but certainly it will not be a vain effort.
I loved the dog driving the car! I remember that one!
Good thirteen. Look for mine by next week.
August 31st, 2006 2:54 pm
That Tom Clancy quote is one of my favorite writing quotes.
My Very Special 13 is up.
August 31st, 2006 3:29 pm
Great list! I particularly enjoyed #2, which I was surprisingly able to read quite well!
August 31st, 2006 4:23 pm
This really has given me a couple of things to think about that are different than what I normally think about! Thank you.
That’s amazing with the messed up words thing. It is a perfect illustration of how wildy adaptable the mind is, and how we need to be constantly vigilent regarding our perceptions, because we can easily fool ourselves. Happy Thursday!
August 31st, 2006 4:40 pm
I drove through Floyd county twice over the weekend when I went to the blog conference in Martinsville. If I go next year I will plan a day to come visit. I did say hello and wave on the way through though- did you hear it? Be blessed today. Loved the list as always.
August 31st, 2006 4:41 pm
My Thirteen are up!
Go check em out…
Love the pic of Jazzy and the comment about the round hay bales!
August 31st, 2006 7:13 pm
#6 is the best!
August 31st, 2006 8:35 pm
That video is a hoot! Saw it the other day and enjoyed it just as much a second time. Hmmmm, wonder if I should try that at the fitness room tomorrow? Not!
Visited your sisters blog…I can’t EVEN imagine losing my entire blog! I felt so bad for her.
I’d mentioned OneTrueMedia to you for the videos….I find it very simple to use.
August 31st, 2006 9:20 pm
I love that video too! What time is it going to be live on MTV??? Did I miss it. I love you too Colleen xo
August 31st, 2006 11:28 pm
Colleen, if I were you, and I couldn’t have some of your son’s pottery for lack of space – I’d move!!
August 31st, 2006 11:40 pm
I wonder how many times the guys in the video got to within seconds of finishing and one of them screwed up. I wonder how many times it was the same one and whether the others talk to him any more.
September 1st, 2006 12:06 am
The story of Kathy and the rediscovery of her blog has been a wonderful reminder for me of how shake-ups might be really for turning up new possibilities and looking at things in new ways. I’m going to try to focus more on that idea. ….I thank you for the inspiration from the writing/blogs both of you do…and I appreciate your sharing my thoughts here. …..I started to fall for the demise of round hay bales tale and started to feel concerned at their impending loss. So it was doubly rewarding to have a laugh on the one hand and to be relieved on the other to know it wasn’t true.
September 1st, 2006 12:45 am
I love what Catinka Knoth said..about what we write in a blog. ”a value across time and space”
Here from Michele’s tonight…love your blog colleen.
September 1st, 2006 7:32 am
I think that if my blog disappeared, I might be devastated for a minute. And then I’d presume it to be an omen and go back to pen and paper.
Not such a bad idea, at any rate.
September 1st, 2006 11:42 am
I always love your TT! And thanks for the recap of your dream…From youre mouth to God’s ear! YES!
I LOVE that Last Words sight…it is a kind of funny idea, isn’t it? I wonder how accurate these things are though…(lol)
I had seen that video somewhere else…It is pretty amazing, but I wonder how many times people were hurt, learning when to get off and on!
September 1st, 2006 11:43 am
Photobucket has a very easy to use site. I’ve even posted short videos to my blog. And I know nothing about this sort of thing.
September 1st, 2006 3:24 pm
we caught the treadmill thing last night…soo cool.
September 1st, 2006 6:01 pm
re: #12
i use YouTube. you upload your movie to youtube and then it will give you a link to post in your blog.
here from Michele’s.
September 1st, 2006 8:13 pm
Thursday 13 – love #2, I can’t believe how easy it is to read. I transcribe for a living and proofread for fun(?). Thanks for sharing!
September 2nd, 2006 1:33 am
Happy TT a little late!
Your mixed up words worked….I just skimmed right over them and read it with no problems-wierd!
I want to go to a blog prom!
September 2nd, 2006 11:48 am
Let Kathy know I’m glad she and Tig’re back? I tried to leave her a message yesterday but the comments wouldn’t load.
September 2nd, 2006 1:19 pm
Thank you Pearl.
I saw that you tried, but there was no text.
Tripod is upgrading and many people are having trouble. I myself can still not comment back unless I do it through FireFox. My sister Sherry can’t comment at all.
I appreciate that you made the attempt.
Thank you.
Kathy
September 2nd, 2006 9:28 pm
Amy saw them perform that video this week on MTV and had told me about it. I’m glad you posted a link to it. That was fun.
September 6th, 2006 9:40 am
Yes, I know it’s Wednesday and another whole TT comes out tomorrow. I like to savor your site and pictures so this is when I had the most time. A Blog Prom….girl, you crack me up. Several of the round bales around here are encased in white plastice….from a distance they look like big mashmellows…(just a thought!)
