Red Hot at 55
“I wrote my first hot flash poem,” I announced to my women friends, who were gathered together for a tea party in honor of our friend isa being in town. “I put it in the Museletter, and so now everybody knows!” I confessed.
“I’m having one right now,” someone said. “Is my face red?”

Hot Flash at Night
Any tossing and turning
will have me pouring hot pepper
from a shaker that used to hold salt

I love it! And that hydrant is perfect. When I first saw “hot flash poem” I thought of “flash fiction” — so why not “hot flash fiction”?

LOL, LOL…GREAT Hot Flash Poem, Colleen…I think you captured the “feeling” of it better than anyone I’ve ever read. Congratulations! It’s perfection!

I remember a long hotflash summer a number of years ago. I always felt a little tired as if I had just been running.

They have pills for that…

Oh I don’t want those…no, no, no…mine will be even earlier I’m afraid because I am childless!
PS- I think it is so cool that you know someone like Isa.

They just started this summer and are actually pretty mild. HRT has been shown to have risks. I use Don Quai and Chaste Tree with good results and recommend Susun Weeds books for women, in this case Menopausal Years the Wise Woman Way. http://www.ashtreepublishing.com/bookshop/menopause.php

hopefully it’s a while before i experience those- but i have a friend in her 30’s who is already going through menopause. my mom went through it the natural way, using herbs and dietary means and seemed to have an easy transition.

OMG! I thought it was my high blood pressure acting up! I just had my first one this weekend! Oh and let Deana know that I am childless also, and I’m 49!

I used to keep a wicker fan beside my bed, and when I woke up with night sweats, I fanned myself. Sometimes I threw off the covers and ripped off my nightgown.
When my mom started having flashes, she would run outside on the porch in the dead of winter and fan herself with her skirt. I thought she was nuts, but I learned why she did it….LOL

Have you got a close-up of that hydrant? It would fit right in with my fire hydrant series. About the hot flashes… they are just power surges. I should have them but don’t….thank goodness.

I remember one day I came home and found that my mother was wearing glasses. I was stunned and asked her why…she had never worn glasses before… and she told me when you get in your 40s most people need them for reading. I didn’t believe that it would ever happen to me!
srp, you can use the fire hydrant photo and maybe crop it closer?

I relate. My flashes are fairly mild so far but rosecea has come for a visit on my once fair and lovely facial complexion. I found a woman dermotologist a bit older than me and she is my new best friend!

I knew there were advantages to being my age…not the least being that I will never again have a hot flash, (at least not that type!) Nice poem, Colleen.

OMG.. I can so relate. 🙂

Your inner child playing with matches already? Childfree brings menopause earlier? really? I had no idea.

So true! Meno has me doing all kinds of crazy things…and my memory is sometimes pretty bad! I had 21 flashes in a day once. I’d be in the middle of teaching gr. 3’s and I’d have to go get kleenex and mop up my stomach under my top! Good thing it wasn’t Gr. 8!
I found black cohash and wild yam helped immensely.
