Beautiful pictures — I am missing flowers this year in Chicago. Between the early draught and the cicadas, nothing much came into full bloom except the early flowers like tulips. This made me miss my roses, which just won’t flower this season. There’s always next year!

My students know my love for flowers and if any of them showed up with these blooms it would be hard to not deem them teachers’ pets!

You always take such beautiful photos! The teacher’s pet, #6, is one of my favorites. We used to have them growing down beside (almost IN) the mountain stream that flowed through our back yard. Was that plant near the water, Colleen? If I’m not mistaken, it’s a cardinal flower.

The Cardinal flower, Lobelia cardinalis, blooms in low moist areas, marshes and wet meadows, and along creeks and streams. Cardinal flower is easy to propagate from seed. The seed should be collected during September and October after the seed pods turn brown and dry. The very small seeds should be put in a seed tray with moist potting soil and refrigerated for 5 weeks. After refrigeration place them in a window with good southern exposure. They’ll be ready to plant in the garden in early spring.

I wish I had some of the seeds from those plants I used to have. Ah, but the plants stayed put when I sold the house.

Bonnie, I see your an avid researcher too. I tried briefly to find out the name of that Parkway flower, the only one in the batch that is wild. It was growing across the dirt road from a creek near my house. And I checked, late summer is the bloom time. So I would say Cardinal Flower is the one. I’ll check back for seeds.

Flower blog? Uhm, I’ll think about it … lol … long enough! Nope, no flower blog. I’m a word person … and also a wordy person … but I know too few flowers to do that. You, on the other hand, could do the photos while I write the words while we BOTH do the research for a coffee table book of wildflowers! Yay, for us! Let me know when we should have our first meeting to plan the book’s content.
