13 Thursday: Indian Summer
1. The neighborhood dogs are sitting out October … like wallflowers in the corner … they’re overdressed in fur.
2. I love an Indian Summer because it lets me stay in denial about the coming of cold weather a little longer.
3. These days I’ve taken to wearing an orange cat cap with black ears that stick up because it helps me keep my sense of humor. I wore it over the weekend to help Joe keep his too.
4. But THIS is what I really want to be for Halloween.
5. And I came this close. HERE.
6. Instead of going through the vicious cycle of dyeing my hair or freaking out because I’ve started to go gray, I’ve decided to pretend that I’m going blonde. People pay good money to have that done and some say blondes have more fun.
7. I was in Oddfellas Cantina recently, picking up one of my favorite lunches to go, a “Rude Boy Burrito.” Doug Thompson was there too and we both were curious about how the Rude Boy got its name. Was it named after somebody rude? Would there be a good story in the answer?
8. I knew that the name originated with the Cantina’s first owners, Erika and Kris, who now run FloydFest, and so I later emailed Erika and asked her. She answered, “Rude Boy is the slang for a Jamacian ‘non-conformist.’ It’s a rasta-style rebel!” She explained how Kris was into Bob Marley when they opened Oddfella’s and how at one time they thought about naming a restaurant “Rude Boy Burritos.”
9. Sometimes I find myself sitting and typing in front of my computer and I don’t know how I got there.
10. My friend Rob has been embroiled in a painful controversy regarding a book titled “The Truth about Slavery …” So begins a post I am working on for tomorrow, and while you’re waiting for that you can look at THIS found at Tabor’s blog.
11. Last night I went to a party that was part Blessingway for my girlfriend Juniper’s daughter who is getting married and part birthday party for her. My young friend Jade was at there. He told me that his mother got mad at him for saying “Dude” too many times. He’s thinking of getting his hair done in a liberty spike. My friend Mara’s daughter Kayla was at the party too. She got the dog to pose with a birthday hat on so that I could take a picture.
12. Shakespeare is like computer generated magic art. At first I don’t understand a word of it, like I can’t see the picture hidden in magic art, but soon something clicks and it everything makes perfect sense.
13. Meditation is like magic art too. But it’s not like Shakespeare.
Thursday headquarters is here. My other 13’s are here. View more 13 Thursday’s here.

I’d love to get my face painted for Halloween!
October 11th, 2007 1:40 am
I am one of the people who deeply dislike dressing up in costumes …Halloween is something I first experienced at the old age of 17, not any earlier.
Some people look terrific going gray!! my neighbor is the best example.
Great pic of that sweet little girl and the dog with the bday hat on!!
Happy thirteening 🙂

You are so right about #12

Ooh, my eyes have gone all squiffy from that magic art. And I would confirm, meditation is definitely not like Shakespeare – it’s much, much better!
PS I think a head covered in butterflies would be fetchingly scary! 😉

I love the imagery of #1 – glad I got to read it again. Thanks too for the bit of trivia about “Rude Boy”. I’m sure I’ll use as conversation next time I’m eating at Oddfellas. And, boy oh boy do I appreciate your poem about eyebrows…you hit the nail on the head, my friend.

Great list!!! I, however, am looking forward to the crisp air!

I’m diggin’ the analogy to Shakespeare. Nice one.

I heard that indian summer isn’t really indian summer until you have a frost.
Great list as usual. xoxo
PS I can’t wait to read your post tomorrow. I found the video sad!

I had the cat hat posted but took it off. It just didn’t seem to fit and is not very flattering. Maybe I’ll put it back. The weather has turned just today, bringing a coolness about my feet.

I don’t know if blonds have more fun, but it’s a nice color, lol !

I like that butterfly hat!
I am so happy it is a bit cool today. I am sick of the heat and dryness. My pets haven’t put back on any fur yet, they still pant all day long.
I think Rude Boy Burritos is an excellent name for a restaurant.

Indian Summer? I’m hoping for an Indian Monsoon Season. But I love the butterfly hat thing, and am now considering doing a version with flies.

Colleen,
Amazing 13 as always, but I have one question: How would you get the butterflies to stay in one place on that hat???! lol!
Happy TT!

I think the butterfly headdress is more of a fantasy than anything else. Once, Joe gave me a bouquet of handpicked wildflowers that had a real butterfly on one of them. It stayed in place and I wondered how he pulled it off. I can’t remember how long it stayed perched on the flowers…I’m thinking it was days.
From what I can tell, besides rice and beans, the Rude Boy has guacamole, cilantro, and melted cheese. Yum!
Here’s what I found on Indian Summer in the Wikipedia: Indian summer is a name given to a period of sunny, warm weather in autumn, not long before winter. Usually occurring after the first frost, Indian summer can be in late October or early November in the northern hemisphere

** Love the hat ** Butterflies are floating around our collards, the last of the peppers, too. Do the butterflies want something for dinner?
October 11th, 2007 6:48 pm
What a fun list! I love that it kind of rambles – it’s almost more interesting in it’s flow – like a prose poetry.
October 11th, 2007 7:23 pm
Daisyville would not come up… so… I’ll just have to guess what you really want to be for Halloween… Laura Ingalls Wilder maybe?
I think you’d make a cute LIW. 🙂
If I haven’t mentioned that I enjoy the little “13” signs you create or happen on, I do!
I love the kitty hat (of course).

Indian summer there means Russian blizzard here … and I’ve loved reading all about the Floyd Hotel … I want to be there! 🙂
October 12th, 2007 7:06 am
Thanks for the link…although it was to something very sad. But maybe it will help make a difference. I love the butterfly photo and am wondering if I can pull something like that off. My hair is almost totally gray but I cannot bear letting the dye job go and looking at least 10 years older…maybe someday.

Haven’t had frost yet so no official Indian Summer yet! You must know one of my favourite poems, “Indian Summer”…Along the line of smokey hills, The crimson forest stands, And all the day the bluejay calls throughout the autumn lands….(2 more verses)
