13 Thursday: Blog Eggnog
1. I have a fantasy poetry troupe called The Beat Mix, a play on the word beatniks.
2. My poem in which a blender figures in prominently is HERE.
3. Santa has a blog HERE. “One Hundred Things About Santa” is HERE.
4. My Asheville potter son, Josh, just got blogged by someone other than me HERE.
5. I wonder what kind of scrambled eggs eggnog would make.
6. I love the idea of hats but think of them more as props than clothes.
7. A blatant typo in the middle of a post that sits there for days before I see it is equivalent or worse than going to high school with a big zit on your face.
8. I sneeze loudly, yawn loudly, and stomp up the stairs loudly. Last night in bed I tossed and turned so loudly that I woke myself up.
9. I feel discriminated against when it comes to bathrobes. I like pink as much as the next girl, but I want a new terrycloth bathrobe and all the women’s ones are in pale pastel colors. A pale colored robe wouldn’t last a week with me before it was covered in grime and stains. Why do men get all the dark vibrant blue, green, and purple colors?
10. I was up bright and early on Monday morning to roll a guy whose midriff was showing around on a floor and blow air into a dummy. Can you guess what I was doing?
11. “Colleen, do you know how Christmas came to be called X-mas?” my friend Chris recently asked. “I don’t know, but I hope it doesn’t mean something like X-husband.” Of course, I was googling X-mas as soon as I could get my hands on a computer and discovered that: “The word “Christ” and its compounds, including “Christmas,” have been abbreviated for at least the past 1,000 years, long before the modern “Xmas” was commonly used. “Christ” was often written as “XP” or “Xt”; there are references in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle as far back as 1021 AD.
12. I also found out that eggnog adopted the nog part of its name from the word noggin, a Middle English phrase used to describe a small, wooden, carved mug used to serve alcohol in.
13. I use my real name on my blog because why would I want my alter ego instead of the real me to be the one to benefit from all the great friendships, connections, and opportunities that come via blogging ?
Thursday headquarters is here. My other 13’s are here. View more 13 Thursday’s here. This is my 112th TT.

I did an alphabet list with the letter “X” and have some of the same information. Hope you get a vibrant jewel toned robe for Christmas. Merry Christmas….thanks for all the great posts and pictures. I always feel like I’m visiting my next door neighbor when I come.
December 20th, 2007 9:07 am
I dislike pastels and would rather have a purple or blue bathrobe too!!
December 20th, 2007 9:40 am
You can’t find a dark colored bathrobe ?? I have a deep purple velvet one with oriental brodery around the collar, want mine, lol ??
December 20th, 2007 9:52 am
Every store and every catalog only has light colored ones for women and dark colors for men. Maybe it’s an American thing. I have a navy one that I love, but it’s a small mens and getting old. Many years ago I had a deep purple one that I loved and have been looking for another every since.

About typos, it’s funny because I tend to be somewhat of a perfectionist, but when it comes to blogging I don’t worry about them to much. Usually when I catch one on one of my posts I fix it but with the amount of writing I do and with the amount of comments that get written every day (that’s where I make my biggest boo boos actually), I’m learning to just relax about it. I liked the little bit about the origins or X-Mas, interesting stuff! Happy TT!
December 20th, 2007 10:26 am
I grew up on store-bought eggnog, so I’m still convinced that mere humans cannot make the stuff. It cannot be recreated at home.
December 20th, 2007 10:26 am
Nice to meet you and your blog. I too use my real name for the same reason. Besides, I have no idea who else I’d be or want to be! Merry Christmas.
December 20th, 2007 10:35 am
X comes from the Greek letter that means “Ch” and that P would be the Greek “R” that comes next in the spelling of Christ … or rather, “Christos” in the Greek. The keep-Christ-in-Christmas people are not usually convinced when I try to explain that Xmas is from the Greek. Therefore, I think we should all study Greek and be informed, don’t you?
December 20th, 2007 10:41 am
Yes,some people think that using X-mas is a conspiracy to X out Christ. And I didn’t know how it came about until I just recently researched it.
December 20th, 2007 10:43 am
i enjoyed the blog post about josh, and their experiences in asheville. it always makes me feel a little homesick when i read about that area.
re:hats…. i never wear them except in winter, when they become an extension of my head. 🙂 my favorite i bought in a little eclectic shop downtown blacksburg….it’s fleece and so soft and warm that i forget i have it on.
i do have a blog alter ego for privacy, but my name slips out often. 🙂 most of my regular visitors know my real name thru e-mails and such, though….
merry christmas, merry x-mas, feliz navidad, happy holidays to you! 🙂
December 20th, 2007 10:55 am
I use my real name too. I think a certain amount of transparency is important. I never knew about the X thing. My friend Christine went by the name Xine for a long time. Interesting.
Happy TT!

The best eggnog is from The Creamery in Burnt Chimney. Try it with French toast…yum!
December 20th, 2007 11:28 am
Bathrobes…I currently wear my husbands thick dark green and navy blue striped bathrobe. He wasn’t wearing it, preferring a thin Burberry (WalMart) plaid. He still thinks of mine as HIS; mentioned how it needed a slight mend in a seam. So don’t hesitate to shop the men’s department for a darker robe.
Ham: you commented on my blog about your natural ham. I haven’t fixed one in years that didn’t come with directions on the label, but my cookbook says for a fresh (not smoked) ham, whole, bone-in, 10-14 lbs, roast it 18 to 20 mins per pound at 325F. I like to do the scoring thing, insert whole cloves, then slather with a mix of drippings and brown sugar about half-way through. If you have a meat thermometer, you want a temp of 170 to be safe. (160 for a smoked ham). Your kitchen will smell wonderful!

You beat me to the punch on the history of egg nog…as you’ll see in tomorrow’s Friday Fact.
As for “X-mas”…I did know that, but I’m always glad to have its history come out so that more people can relax about the world taking Christ out of Christmas…er, I meant X-mas.
Hope you’re staying warm and well!
December 20th, 2007 12:11 pm
I loved #8, it made me laugh out loud. I do the same things. #10 must be CPR because I did the same thing for years. Have a great TT. 🙂
December 20th, 2007 3:48 pm
I miss egg nog!!! The only one I’ve ever found that I like was the one from Farm Store when we lived in Florida. Didn’t like any of the ones in TN and having trouble finding any here in NH.
Isn’t it cool that some wrote such a nice thing about Josh on their blog. How awesome is that!!!
Know that makes you happy!!!
I just went to check my bathrobes – a white one, light blue waffle fabric, light blue with flowers, and a pastel lavender…you’re right! No dark colors around!
Blowing up a yard ornament of Santa???
December 20th, 2007 3:48 pm
Asheville—I love Asheville. I’m glad your son got some link love. Eggnog scramble. Actually it sounds pretty nice (?)
I feel the same way you do about bathrobes—it’s best just to buy a man’s one, I think. I like pink, but not on me…
December 20th, 2007 4:46 pm
# 10 – I haven’t a clue – but I’m dying to know….LOL
Say congrats to Josh!
December 20th, 2007 4:48 pm
You are so right about #7. I have found obvious typos that have been there for days and have absolutely cringed!
December 20th, 2007 5:14 pm
Very interesting, especially your historic Xmas Trivia.
Michele sent me to learn about noggins.
December 20th, 2007 6:19 pm
“17. I think TiVo is the greatest invention ever.” LMAO! Santa TiVos…who knew!
eggnog scrambled eggs might be yummy with some gruyere!
10 – CPR class?
Now that I know where X-mas comes from, I don’t mind using it!

“I use my real name on my blog because why would I want my alter ego instead of the real me to be the one to benefit from all the great friendships, connections, and opportunities that come via blogging ?”
ROFL My real ego loves this!
Happy TT!
December 20th, 2007 7:21 pm
I love the tidbit on Xmas. You learn something new everyday!
Mine are up!
December 20th, 2007 8:16 pm
Yeah, I totally agree about that color issue. I don’t get it; what makes TPTB think that women only want pastels???
December 20th, 2007 9:12 pm
Another B – Wow!!!
December 20th, 2007 9:14 pm
reread my 13 to answer you question about the car
December 20th, 2007 9:51 pm
Wonderful TT. 🙂 Try the eggnog scramble and see?
I just go ahead and buy the men’s robes. They get cheaper jeans, too, but that doesn’t help me. 🙁
My TT is about the solstice this week.
December 20th, 2007 10:12 pm
#13…me and you both girlfriend!
I bought the super soft yellow robe last time…it hasn’t done as badly as I thought it would. The super soft fluffy stuff seems to fend off grime more than my last terry robe that was white and really didn’t make it long. I think it was actually Martin who made me throw that one away because I was starting to disgust him or soemthing….I think the really soft fluffy ones repel dirt BUT I do look like a big old duck in it! A big fat waddly fluffy duck!!!
I’d like some more grown up colors too…peacock blue would be nice!
December 20th, 2007 10:29 pm
We got Heather a royal blue terry cloth robe a couple of years back. Also one year Trish made us egg nog and it had scramble eggs in it. Ask Andrew about it sometime. ox
December 20th, 2007 11:01 pm
Interesting about the X in Xmas…I have learned something new today! Love my white bathrobe..I can use bleach if necessary! Have a wonderful, Merry Christmas!
December 21st, 2007 7:19 am
Happy Christmas, Colleen!
December 21st, 2007 12:21 pm
Guys, it’s CPR!! Comedy Plus got it.
December 21st, 2007 12:44 pm
I concur on 13 100 per cent. I hope you and yours have a blessed memory making holiday season , one for the record books. My grandaughter is here and we are baking and Disneying for the next 5 days – a whirlwind I’m sure. sk Christmas and all its magic I need this year..
December 21st, 2007 11:00 pm
Just buy a guy’s robe–or steal your husbands. That’s what I did. Besides, it has his manly smell–something that puts interesting thoughts into my head.
December 23rd, 2007 1:15 am

I especially like number 13!
Michele sent me today to say that.
N. (who is okay with an alter ego getting the blame)
