13’s a Charm
1. I just recently figured out – while dressing in front of the woodstove on a frigid morning – why the character in “Twas the Night before Christmas” slept with a cap on. He was cold.
2. I’m so glad I live in a place where you still see smoke coming out of chimneys.
3. Worlds most bizarre statues via lifecrusier Here.
4. World’s most unlikely friendship HERE. (Both this and #3 are really worth looking at.)
5. Do you ever get the feeling on a slow day that everyone has given up blogging as a new year’s resolution?
6. I just love this, by Ani Difranco: “So I walk like I’m on a mission, ‘cuz that’s the way I groove. I’ve got more and more to do, I’ve got less and less to prove. It took me too long to realize that I don’t take good pictures ‘cuz I have the kind of beauty that moves…” Read about Ani at Floyd Fest HERE.
7. Watching the presidential primary coverage recently I realized that there’s a part of me that doesn’t trust anyone running for President. Why would anyone want that much power and stress?
8. Watching the PBS show “Pioneers in Televison,” I noticed that the men being interviewed – Dick Van Dyke and Andy Griffin – looked much better than the woman being interviewed – Mary Tyler Moore and Marlo Thomas – because the men hadn’t had plastic surgery.
9. I have the kind of husband who doesn’t notice for weeks if I hang a new picture or change the curtains. But he notices what counts right away, like when I get a new bra.
10. Someone on the Diane Rehm show yesterday referred to Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton as poetry vs. prose.
11. I’m starting a favorite word list. So far I have: Baffled, lollygag, discombobulated, pesto, and muffin. What’s yours?
12. Wearing my new beet red shiny silk pajamas that my husband gave me for Christmas, I say, “I feel like present.” He answers, “And your smile is the bow.”
13. The days are shorter and we sleep more in winter. So how does anything get done?
Thursday headquarters is here. My other 13’s are here. View more 13 Thursday’s here.

Loved the statues.
Had read many times about the headless chicken but never saw a real pic.
Hope I sleep tonight.
Happy TT

I think your hubby is a keeper. What sweet things he says and always at the right time. I think I’ll start a list of favorite words. I love your randomness it’s so comforting.

Most body hear escapes from the top of your head, so, if your feet are cold, put on your hat!
January 10th, 2008 12:56 am
My husband shaved his head and now..his hair is back and he is much warmer! Great list!
January 10th, 2008 2:48 am
Your nr 12 is adorable!!
Muffin is a beautiful word…
Happy TT!
January 10th, 2008 5:26 am
As always a very fun and fime TT, Colleen….
I saw that Pioneers of TV Show, too….Mary Tyler Moore’s face now looks like a mask….A smooth mask, but a mask, nonetheless…Very Scary.
I visited both those sites above and both are fascinating….Some of those sculptures are really quite wonderful!
You should take a picture of yourself in those very gorgeous sounding pajamas….I love what joy said!
January 10th, 2008 5:48 am
Those are some pretty incredible statues!
January 10th, 2008 5:55 am
pizzazz, effervescent, crystaline, ebouillant(sp) many but you’ve urged to to make a list on my desk Thanks for that – sassy
January 10th, 2008 7:25 am
Wow, some weird statues! Thanks for the link. #2 – me too – thank God we are country girls! #5 – I thought so too at first, but folks seem to be coming around now, me included. #10 – so true, he speaks so well, especially compared to what we have had to listen to for 8 years. #11 – cattywompus.
Great 13 as usual, in fact positively charming!
January 10th, 2008 7:29 am
Its very hard to get back to blogging after the holidays. I find myself sitting in front of the screen with absolutely nothing to say. I think your hubby is a keeper too!
January 10th, 2008 7:35 am
1. Yeah, the smoke coming out of chimneys is definitely something to see!
2. Neat statues…well, most of them. The robot ones don’t do anything for me.
5. I thought it was me…I’ve noticed a definite slow down in posts and comments. I expected as such over the holidays, but it seems to still be the case 10 days into January.
6. Great line – “more and more to do and less and less to prove”.
7. I’ve thought the same thing…why indeed would anyone want to put themselves through all of the scrutiny.
10. That’s an interesting analogy. Obama certainly is poetic when he speaks, but at least he doesn’t rhyme all of his words like Jesse Jackson! I saw ole Jesse on the news the other day – he had called a conference to raise issues about the mortgage crisis. He just can’t help himself. I think his brain’s wired to rhyme!
11. I like “scribble”…both in sound and in meaning. I posted about it at http://spatter.typepad.com/spatter/2007/08/scribbling.html
12. That joeyk is sure a sweetie!
January 10th, 2008 8:31 am
OOps I did not mean to post the headless chicken link. So I changed number 4 back to what I really intended. And this week has picked up but before that it was s l o w.
I’m adding brouhaha to my favorite word list, which I just saw on michele agnew’s blog.
January 10th, 2008 10:33 am
My favorite word is detritus. “The loose detritus of thought, washed down to us through long ages.”– H. Rogers, Essays (found on Dictionary.com).
If people are sleeping more, they are blogging less. Except for my insomniac husband, who can’t sleep when it’s dark, and seems to stay up ~even more~ during the winter!
January 10th, 2008 10:35 am
I enjoyed you list of random thoughts. Reading it made me want to call you up and meet for coffee to chat. Love #s 6 and 12 … but am also intrigued by #7, 8, and 11. Thanks for sharing.
Hugs and blessings,
January 10th, 2008 11:18 am
Yeah, it is because they want so much power and success that you can’t trust them. Some of them I think would sell their mamas or do some nasty sex acts to get that brass ring! And number 9- that is a good kind of husband!
January 10th, 2008 11:21 am
What a great comment – “Your smile is the bow”. We can’t burn here in Denver – it’s just cold and the smog is bad. I’m glad you have a stove though – I bet it’s warm!
I have to admit that I think the same thing about the Presidential race – sad too.
Happy TT!
January 10th, 2008 12:29 pm
My favorite word is “blissful”.
You just made me feel it.
January 10th, 2008 12:40 pm
5. Do you ever get the feeling on a slow day that everyone has given up blogging as a new year’s resolution?
No, I figure it’s a chance to meet new bloggers!
11. I’m starting a favorite word list. So far I have: Baffled, lollygag, discombobulated, pesto, and muffin. What’s yours?
Liminality is my favorite word, both for the sound and for the “threshold” idea. I’ll come back and add more words later; I have to get ready to run some errands for now.
January 10th, 2008 1:35 pm
When that kitten jumped out from behind the wall and the crow jumped…OMG!!! LMAO! That was GREAT!
January 10th, 2008 2:08 pm
Loved both of the sites you sent me to. The kitten and the crow were awesome!!!
Those statues were great…I think my favorite was the one from Salt Lake City where the woman is swinging the child…it’s great!
Love your 13 – you always do such a nice job!!!

#10. Line was created by the Hillary campaign and has spread like sown oats across the internets.
“You campaign in poetry, but you govern in prose.”–Hillary Clinton, Nashua, N.H., January 6, 2008
My favorite word (right now at least): conundrum
January 10th, 2008 5:41 pm
First time I’ve commented on your site.
Very enjoyable reading! Looking forward to more.
January 10th, 2008 9:07 pm
Dang…I’m always cold and never considered sitting here in a hat. I hope I remember tomorrow, I’ll go out and buy one…seriously. It;s gotta be cheaper than running the furnace.
Michele sent me to get enlightened.
Oh, and I can’t say my favorite word, lest I offend 🙂
January 10th, 2008 10:49 pm
The statues were amazing and some provocative.
Favorite words list… mine definitely has hoopla and corruscate and festoonery and foofaraw. 🙂
I played today. AND, there are more Pasadean Rose Float photos.

I don’t sleep more in winter but my cats do 25 h instead of 24 !
January 12th, 2008 8:07 pm
Continuing my list of favorite words … how about “opprobrium”?
January 12th, 2008 8:48 pm
Had to look that one up. That would be a good word to play fictionary with.
January 24th, 2008 1:58 pm
Continuing my word list … today I was reading an Aussie’s blog and found “fair to middling.” Now, there’s a phrase I haven’t heard in awhile! Let’s see if I can work it into conversation (or blogging) sometime today or tomorrow. Can you believe I used the words flummoxed and bumfuzzled and heavens to Murgatroid in the last 24 hours? And I had fun last week with jury-rigged. Also, I need to add discombobulated from your list and conundrum from Jennifer’s list. So here’s my compilation of words, as it now stands:
liminal (rather than liminality)
opprobrium
jury-rigged
flummoxed
bumfuzzled
discombobulated
conundrum
January 24th, 2008 2:30 pm
Great words, Bonnie. I grew up hearing “fair to middling” but never saw it in print. I looked it up and discovered that it comes from a reference to food like sausage, in that sausage is made using less than top quality parts of meat.
I haven’t come up with any new words myself but I’m inclined to add flummoxed and bumfuzzled to the list. (My spell check doesn’t recognize bumfuzzled).
January 24th, 2008 4:46 pm
My (Word) spell checker doesn’t recognize blog.

Here’s another word for our favorite words list: exuberant. To see what I wrote about it this morning, read the top of my sidebar here:

My latest word for my word list is “vertiginous,” which I wrote about here:
