A Trifecta of Bloom
1. For a small window of time in the spring, three blooms converge in symphony of color in the corner of my yard.
2. Dogwood, azalea, and baby irises come in one after the other, and for a week or two they co-exist together like the colorful layered fruit of an English trifle.
3. I especially love this winning combination because all the players are wild. A purple carpet of naturalized irises circles the white blossomed dogwood tree, while wild azaleas spin around it like a pink skirt. I’ve take dozens of pictures at different times of day and in different weather but none of them do the scene justice. It’s a like a poem that needs to be heard out loud, a living beauty that needs to be seen face to face to be fully enjoyed.
Post note: Happy Birthday to my brother Johnny.

Beautiful! I can smell the fragrance from here!

After last night’s heavy rain and near tornado, the irises have drooped and shriveled, but the azalea perfume still looms.

Oh, so pretty! I especially love the second photo. Judy told me that the storms passed through the area…thankfully, the tornadoes were close but did no severe damage to Floyd.

Hey Colleen. I hadn’t been to your blog in a while so I thought I would drop a line and see your always gorgeous pictures. Spring time is so beautiful there. Flowers always seem so much happier when there aren’t buildings and cars everywhere. Lucky us we seem to be having a stroke of wonderful spring time weather here as well so our patio smells like Jasmine and Honeysuckle.
I hope that you are well.

is that called wild azalea and not honeysuckle??I want some
May 11th, 2008 11:11 am
It’s azalea, not the nursery bought kind. Maybe it’s in the honeysuckle tribe, at least it smells as sweet.

This is the most I have ever seen the wild azalea bloom don’t you think. It is all up and down our little creek (or was before this rain/wind mess)…I was delighted to find that we have one right in the center behind our pond and with the other trees gone it got to bloom. It was literally the center of attention. I think it must’ve been good conditions for it this year. Now if only my orange one would bloom. I transplanted one of the “flame” looking ones from the mountains last year but it hasn’t gotten many leaves on it or anything.
