The Thirteen Ring Circus
1. I know a young girl whose middle name is Lavender. If you were going to name a baby after an herb, flower, or spice, which would you choose?
2. If you had your own talk show, would you dress more like Oprah or Ellen?
3. When I walk to the mailbox I like exaggerate my stride and the movement of my hips to counter the effects of sitting too long at the computer. While doing this recently I remembered that in high school we called girls that wiggled while the walked “big wheels.” It was a derogatory term.
4. Big wheels are also those low to the ground three wheel bikes that played a major role in the early lives of my son’s generation.
5. Now I have Tina Turner’s song “Proud Mary” stuck in my head because of the “big wheel turning” line.
6. When I see guys with those Kewpie doll hairdos that stick up on the top of their head like THIS, they remind me of babies, and I wonder if they know that in the 50’s that’s how mother’s combed their baby boy’s heads.
7. I know a couple of kids named Sage, a young woman named Yarrow and another named Coriander.
8. I think of my blog as something like a DVD movie with menu selections. The informal writings I do, in balance with more formal pieces, are like backstage outtakes, deleted scenes, and my director’s commentary.
9. Writing poetry is like a tightrope walk between not being too obscure or too obvious.
10. THIS video clip of Bill Moyers talking about Barack Obama brought tears to my eyes.
11. When Joe and I were visiting Josh in Marshall, North Carolina, this past September we all drove over to Mars Hill, North Carolina, which was only a few miles and one letter away.
12. When an old friend of Joe’s offered us free tickets to see Cirque du Soleil this weekend in D.C. Joe asked if I wanted to go on such short notice. “Are you kidding?” I answered, “Cirque do Soleil is on my bucket list!”
13. Then I fantasized putting a sign on my blog that said: “Ran off with the Circus.”
Thursday headquarters is here. My other 13’s are here. View more 13 Thursday’s here.

I really love reading your thoughts 🙂

You will love Cirque do Soleil! I remember the first time I saw it – it was mesmerizing! Enjoy your trip, girl!
We are still discussing the child’s name. Hubby got funny on me, ending up with “Corn,” after we batted the spice cabinet jar names around and around! I think I would consider Clove for a girl and Basil for a boy. But, I do love Tamarind, so I might have to name her Tamarind Clove. 😉
I love your Thursday posts so much I get excited on Wednesday anticipating them! :))

Happy TT and for #1 Sage or Rose. 😉
Your thoughts are great…love em!

Sounds like my sister, years ago – run away with the circus!

I like Lily or Violet. The nickname I have always used for my daughter is Sweat Pea.
Sage is also lovely.

1. Not sure what I’d name my kid, but I used to like the movie star Basil Rathbone because of his name.
2. Definitely Ellen
10.Bill Moyers is such a gifted essayist!
12.I’ve been fortunate to see two different Cirque du Soleil shows…awesome!!!!!! I still want to see the one in Vegas called “O” and too, the one with the Beatles music.
We made it back to Florida with no problems…now lots of work to do unpacking and getting settled in.
December 4th, 2008 6:44 am
Guess it would be Oprah for me because I always love fashion. I saw Cirque du Soleil and also enjoyed it…but it is a bit like tobasco on a thick chocolate pie…I really like #9 and will have to think on that some more.
December 4th, 2008 7:07 am
I get it, Tabasco on chocolate pie. I was thinking of the opera on acid.
I’d dress more like Ellen too. I dress a lot like her now, pants and vests, but I’d mix in a little Oprah too because I like a skirt now and then. But never her shoes.
Also know a young woman named Clary. Both my sons were set to be Rosie.
December 4th, 2008 7:22 am
I’d have to go with Rose, which was my grandmother’s nickname.
I love reading your thoughts. It always makes me think of a writing technique I used to use for poetry. Write a word in a circle and then quickly write whatever you think of next, putting them in circles, until you have a lot of words that may or may not be related.
It has a name but at this early hour it escapes me.
December 4th, 2008 7:26 am
I know the technique and have used it before. Is it called Mind Mapping? AKA Brain storm and stream of consciousness. I’ve been reading some of my one and two liners from these lists at open mic and there they come off almost like stand-up comedy (except I’m not able to memorize them).
December 4th, 2008 8:22 am
I like Rosemary.
#6 I always thought this too and think it looks childish on grown men. I laughed out loud when I saw the picture you have. xo
PS Another fun TT.
December 4th, 2008 8:23 am
Oh Yea………..I would dress like Oprah.
December 4th, 2008 9:58 am
My mother’s first name is Iris, but she always went by her middle name, Merlene. That might explain the love I’ve always had of the flower…Enjoy the show.
December 4th, 2008 10:00 am
1. Well…Rosemary is just about my favorite herb…but I don’t know that I’d use that name. How about Camomile? I could call her Cammie 🙂
2. Ellen, of course 🙂 We like the casual!
Oh, man, enjoy Cirque!!!
December 4th, 2008 11:31 am
Oooh, enjoy the Cirque show! They’re really breathtaking!
December 4th, 2008 2:27 pm
Enjoy the “grown-up” circus – have you read Water for Elephants? Pretty good circus related story. Our T13 is here
December 4th, 2008 5:50 pm
I’ve never had the pleasure of seeing Cirque du Soleil, but did see River Dance. That was some seriously awesome step dancing! If you haven’t seen them, put them on your list.
December 4th, 2008 11:02 pm
Hi Colleen, NetChick sent me… Oh ya, that’s me! It’s going to take some getting used to not to say “Michele sent me”
I really enjoyed your 13! Especially this:
8. I think of my blog as something like a DVD movie with menu selections. The informal writings I do, in balance with more formal pieces, are like backstage outtakes, deleted scenes, and my director’s commentary.
Awesome thought. Totally true of my blog, too.
I hope to see you back at “my place” again to play along soon!
Cheers,
Tanya

I named my youngest cat Rosie, but I didn’t think of a Rose !
December 5th, 2008 10:43 am
I too would love to be able to see Cirque du Soleil in person. Enjoy the show!
December 6th, 2008 12:27 am
One of my greatgreatgrandmother’s sisters married a Mr Lavendar, and they had a daughter Louisa. I’ve always thought Louisa Lavendar was a beautiful name (sadly she died in infancy). Cinnamon and Saffron seem to be more popular as names these days though.
December 6th, 2008 11:39 am
My newest great-grandchild, a tiny little creature, is named Chloe Nightingale. Her Mom (& her grandmom) are very emotional & dramatic women. I can see Chloe Nightingale on a theater marquee…and she herself onstage lit with a pinkish spotlight.
December 6th, 2008 10:57 pm
I’d probably go with Sage because I’m a cowgirl.
There’s that actress on TV (one of those cop shows) named Poppy and all the sisters have hippy flower names. I like creative names. But some of the celebrities are a little wild. Apple?

#5 I was watching a very serious news report the other day and all I could think was Woody Woodpecker head.. ahahhah
December 9th, 2008 2:24 pm
from now on I’ll look at guys with hair like that as kewpie dolls. lol.
Cirque de Soleil is great. phenomenal what they can do with their bodies and training.
