13 on a Wet Trampoline
1. I just got asked to a do a writing assignment via a Facebook Instant message.
2. So of course I asked the subject of the proposed interview in a Facebook Instant message if he want to meet me.
3. I named this week’s Thirteen Thursday for THIS video clip.
4. I recently read a list of “Top (111) reasons why I became a poet” by J. E. Peele on Pearl’s blog. My favorite reason to be a poet was: “I’ve arranged to have “orange” rhyme with hinge, flange, and strange.
5. I became a poet for the poetic license. It was either that or be a clown.
6. I like to sing the chorus to THIS song when I’m jumping on my trampoline.
7. I think I like that song because when I’m jumping I feel like a Mexican Jumping Bean.
8. I recently found myself telling someone that the Floyd Empty Bowls fundraiser was smashing success. No bad pun intended.
9. I was interviewing the manager of the Black Water Loft a couple of weeks ago, scribbling scrawling notes in my composition notebook, when she asked, “How many notebooks a year do you go through?”
10. She looked concerned about my messy note taking and said, “But you understand it all, right?” “In a week I won’t be able to read a word of it,” I answered. Truth is, sometimes I pull over on my drive home from an interview to review and rewrite some of my notes, because I can’t read my own writing and if I wait even a day to translate, I won’t remember what I wrote.
11. I just burned a pan on the stove and I hate the way the house smells almost as bad as I hate Deal or No Deal.
12. My son Josh has a nickname for the alcoholic panhandler he knows in Asheville. He calls him a “Mashie,” as in: “Mashie a question … can you spare a dollar.”
13. My brother John (who grew up in the era of “men don’t cry”) calls goose bumps “man tears.”
JUMP (as in Eddie Van Halen) on over to the Thirteen Thursday headquarters for more TT’s HERE.

Number 5 made me laugh.
My 13 is all about ‘icky’ foods. Won’t you join me for a bite?!!!

It’s really annoying, not being able to read one’s own handwriting!
April 2nd, 2009 4:24 am
A good collection of thoughts. I’m used to the smell of burning in the kitchen 🙂

Cheers!

Yes, often my shorthand in my own notebook looks like gibberish when I go back to read it. I hope I’ve never misquoted someone that way, but no complaints yet. 🙂

Interesting TT. I always can read my scribble. When the day comes I can’t I will be sorry.
I love the song “JUMP”!!! I use it on the treadmill. xox

tell us more about your new writing assignment!
April 2nd, 2009 9:34 am
It’s a story about FloydFest for Natural Awakenings of Southwest VA. If I knew how to hyperlink here I would link to both for you. I do have a FloydFest category on my sidebar. Do you have a Natural Awakenings magazine there? The editor of our version lives in Floyd now and is great. I already wrote about a cheese maker and a creamery for her.

Oh, I hate it when something burns. I hate the smell and the clean up. Again your post makes me think. Thanks.
April 2nd, 2009 10:12 am
Your post made me smile. Thanks!

You are so right about that burn smell.. it can linger for days. We are finally into the weather where we can open all the windows and give the house a good airing. Good bye winter smells. 🙂

Then you must sing quite quick and jump on the same time ? I admire your health, lol !

I really enjoyed reading your list this week.
My problem with notebooks is that I have so many started, but I don’t use them consistently for any one thing, there’s book lists next to grocery lists next to phone numbers with no names, all spread out between four really pretty little pocket notebooks.

I so can’t poet. In fact, I’m fairly certain that if I was told to make a poem or die, I’d just have to die. I don’t think poetry is a choice – it’s a gift.
((hug))

Shadow boxing bulge? Your title is better.
April 2nd, 2009 1:22 pm
Did that comment go through? I can’t tell.
April 2nd, 2009 1:49 pm
That is my title. That is me in both the photo and the video.
April 2nd, 2009 4:47 pm
I love the reasons you became a poet–and what the alternative is. Most days I feel like I am a clown.
April 2nd, 2009 5:05 pm
Glad to hear you hate deal or no Deal. I thought I was the only one that those this was just a LITTLE inane.
April 2nd, 2009 5:42 pm
That song you’re singing the chorus of is one of my favorites too!
April 2nd, 2009 11:37 pm
This brought back memories of grade school. We had to do some sort of Mexican dance and … well, is there a song called “Mexican Jumping Beans”? I do remember it was a lot of fun and ended with much hilarity and breathlessness. Should I thank you for nudging me to remember this time.. a long, long, long time ago? Strange things we have buried there in our minds, don’t we.

I carry a tape recorder for that reason. I very seldom go back and listen to it because it is so time-consuming but it reassures my interview subject that I should get it right. That alone is worth the price of the tape recorder.
April 3rd, 2009 5:54 pm
Me too! I started using one this year but I still take notes and write the piece mostly from notes. I go back and listen when I am looking to be accurate with quote and sometimes I hear things I completely forgot.
April 3rd, 2009 10:17 pm
Awww – I love John’s Man Tears.
April 4th, 2009 10:35 pm
Glad you liked em.
Mashie, we’ve got a few around here that earn that name.
April 7th, 2009 9:20 am
That Mashie is too funny! I can truly here it said just like that.
