We Schlepped in our Pajamas
It wasn’t a hike, just a leisurely neighborhood stroll and a chance to hold hands as we walked, Joe in his plaid martial arts PJ bottoms and me in my baggy purple house silks.
Passing a couple of well-groomed yards tucked away off winding dirt roads caused us to think about how wild our own property is and led to my headline comment: “While others were mowing their yards or off to Memorial Day cook-outs and parades, Joe and I schlepped in our pajamas.”
“Irises should be purple,” I first said to him when we reached our destination, a swing chair and flower garden on the edge of a mountain overlook. But I didn’t take much notice of the purple blooms, being more drawn to peek inside the black ones, marvel at the white ones, laugh with delight at the exotic pink and yellow ones, and name the maroon and orange ones Virginia Tech.

Love the pictures – gorgeous! It sounds like you and Joe had a near perfect day. 🙂 Pajama ‘parties’ should be enacted as an item of normalcy for adults as well as children.

Oh yes…we should all have days where we ramble and lounge about in our pajamas and have no particular aim but a lovely place to sit and dream and maybe contemplate the wonders of the natural world. Very therapeutic…I highly recommend it.

I love the word “schlep,” especially because in this context it sounds like “we slept in our pajamas.” Maybe I learned it in Hull. I’ve always used it and it seems to fit so well with the meaning.

I think iris should be purple, too. My mother’s middle name is Iris, and she never liked it, but she had rows of purple iris planted along the foundations of the house!

I would love to plant a whole mixture of colors of iris… and some tulips.. for next year. Perhaps I should give in and listen to the experts, planting in late fall instead of waiting until early March…. might have better and bigger results! Beautiful flowers!

Thank you for sharing your irises. They are very beautiful. I find myself nick naming mine all the time – however not usually in my pjs. I may have to slow down and try that sometime…
