13 Thursday: News to Me
1. While driving home from the grocery store I passed my black Honda CRV with the license plate LETITB parked downtown and had a pang of panic, like I had astral projected out of my body and was watching it on the bed sleeping. Of course, I had forgotten that Joe borrowed my car and I was driving in his truck.
2. The next day while driving I saw a green couch cushion in the middle of the road and thought it was mine.
3. I’m losing it.
4. What will they think of next? When I first heard about electronic cigarettes that look like pens and deliver smokeless vaporized liquid nicotine, I was thinking it was a joke like the Pomegranate phone, which was advertised as a phone that can make coffee. The pomegranate was a publicity stunt. The electronic cigarette is, sadly, real.
5. Said to Joe while trying to pick out a good movie at the video store: It reminds me being at the thrift shop and browsing through racks of polyester trying to find one nice thing in cotton, wool, or silk.
6. Said to Joe while putting on my carpal tunnel metal wrist braces before bed, “If I didn’t love these things, I’d hate them” (they work).
7. I think I’ve been avoiding Twitter because the word rhymes with fritter, means to talk rapidly about trivial matters, and has the word “twit” in it.
8. Favorite line heard last week: I’m not that kind of google. It was spoken by Carrie on Sex in the City after she googled the man she was dating and discovered he had a playboy reputation.
9. As frightening as it sounds, recent studies have shown that cell phone radiation is said to penetrate children’s brains up to 75% and increase their risk of cancer. A study published in the medical journal “The Lancet” reports that children who use mobile phones risk suffering memory loss, sleeping disorders and headaches. More HERE.
10. Because my favorite dessert of late is Paul Newmans’ “ginger” hermit cookies (not to be confused with the “cinnamon” ones which are not nearly as good), I became curious about how these “hermits” got their name and found this: An old-fashioned favorite said to have originated in Colonial New England, this spicy, chewy cookie is full of chopped fruits and nuts. It’s usually sweetened with molasses or brown sugar. It’s said that hermits were named for their long keeping qualities-they’re better when hidden away like a hermit for several days.
11. Are chickens smarter than people? Read about how some chickens are refusing to eat genetically modified feed HERE.
12. Swine Flu Rant Guy is singing my song HERE.
13. There must be an easier way: I just wrote a story for the local paper in which I used word pâté. I couldn’t figure out how to get the accent over the e, so I typed café removed the caf and replaced it with pat. Once I did that my spell check suggested the other mark over the a.

Ha! Sometimes it does seem possible that chickens are smarter than humans. You always have interesting thoughts. Thanks for sharing.

This is brilliant! For the longest time I too thought that I was losing my mind but when I stopped to take a look at those who had been medically diagnosed as such, I realized that I am still in the clear. Thanks for the laughs!

Love your license plate – I should tell Andy about that one – he’s a huge Beatles fan. It’s all I can do to restrain him from buying the new remastered collection. Only a matter of time I guess.
And I like your creativity in solving your accent typing problem – if it were me I would have just come up with a different word for pate – which would be challenging!

Electronic cigarettes. Glad I quit almost 4 months ago!
I LOVE #13 That is definitely something I would do lol
Happy T13!

Interesting video about swine flu. I’m not sure I buy into the conspiracy theory presented therein, however, I don’t plan on getting the vaccine, it just seems like hysteria to me. I think I can rely on my immune system like I have for 30 years to get me through. Happy Thursday!

I laughed out loud at #5. Yep, there’s a LOT of “polyester” out there!
🙂 I would recommend a documentary we just watched called The Singing Revolution about how Estonia found hope (and ultimately freedom) during years of Soviet occupation through their music and song. Very moving.

I agree with your analogy comparing a good movie find with a thrift shop find!!
My 13 is now posted if you’d like to stop by. It’s a play on words today…scroll down below my Thursday Thunks to view. Have a super day!!

The difficulty in inserting accent marks is one of the maddening things about MS Word. Glad you were able to find a way around it.
Great TT.

If I don’t have any difficulties with the hot coffee while chatting on this phone, then it’s the ideal phone for me, lol !
Love the swine flu song, it really gets ridiculous !

Love your license plate and your take on twitter. I’m blogging about my home town this week. *g*

Yeah, I didn’t even watch the whole video because it was buffering so much and I’m sure it was over the top, but I ultimately believe that the powers that be are playing on fears, making too big a deal of it, and making money too.
September 10th, 2009 1:35 pm
Nah, you aren’t losing it. Or if you are, then I am too.
September 10th, 2009 1:37 pm
Those are both very good reasons to avoid Twitter. I am one of the 65+% of people who signed up for it who gave up using it after a couple of weeks.
If you wrote your article in Word, you could have used Insert > Symbol to find a circumflex. They have just about every symbol in every alphabet hidden away there!

My father used to use plastic cigarettes as props to try to help him quit smoking, it never worked, he smoked to the day he died, my mother’s still smoking away, she’s of the opinion that if she doesn’t believe it will hurt her, it won’t.
Not a Twitter fan either.

#3 – your subconscious clearly has a lot going on in there. hugs.

The electronic cigarette just seems wrong on so many levels.
September 10th, 2009 3:23 pm
i have almost given up on twitter!
your analogy is perfect 🙂

Great list, love the video store thoughts, as well as the electronic cigarettes–I heard about those last year and was so glad to know I’d never need them! And twitter… such an interesting concept, so overwhelming. I’m on a break from twitter, not sure I’ll ever go back…
September 11th, 2009 8:12 am
Another great TT. Although I wouldn’t mind trying the electronic cigarette, only I haven’t smoked in over 5 years. xo
September 11th, 2009 9:46 am
IF my car had a steering wheel, I’d go off to get some Vitamin D! And #13 – you’re brilliant!!!
September 11th, 2009 1:14 pm
Great list! Have a great weekend. Here from Tanya’s.

GREAT SONG! I agree!
You and Joe should really sign up for Netflix, Colleen…Their Library is FANTASTIC…Foreigh Films, Independ. Films, etc., etc., etc…..You will NEVER run out of things to rent! I wish I owned some of that Stock because truly, I think it is the smartest idea to come along in I-Don’t-Know-When…
I haven’t heard of Electronis Cigarettes…Ewwwww! Sounds disgusting, actually!
As ALWAYS a very interesting TT13….Always packed full of fun things, seriousness, too…and poetry as well….!

I could see #1 happening to me.
I can relate to 5. So much clothes are polyester, acrylic, teflon what have you. As soon as I see natural fibres that I like I pale at the $200-$800 price tag.
