The 13 Thursday Sand Castle
1. My husband Joe and I are very smitten with our first grandchild Bryce. After hearing that Bryce’s parents are having another baby, Joe jokingly said to me, “You can have the new baby, Bryce is mine.”
2. A couple of months later when we learned the baby was a boy and it all seemed more real, he recanted his original statement, to which I answered, “grandparenting is not for the monogamous.”
3. Grandparents and grandkids are made for each other because they both like to take naps.
4. I sent my girlfriend an email telling here I was going to Mass to stay with my mother and she thought I meant I was going to back to church.
5. At this point in life, the novelty of flying has completely worn off. Getting ready to catch a plane the morning of my trip, I noticed that my hair dryer sounded like plane revving its engine and the thought of flying made me feel like I was going to the dentist.
6. Here at my mother’s house in my home beach town, the internet connection is sketchy. In fact, as if to mimic my mother’s struggle moving around after a spinal fracture caused by osteoporosis, I’ve been forced to awkwardly balance my laptop up on my bent knees while lying in bed to get a connection.
7. Learning what size coffee mug my mother likes, where her sock draw is, how dark she likes her English Muffins toasted, or what she likes to drink with dinner are some of the simple things that matter to me now.
8. While sitting on the couch with my new Netbook, my mother asked, “What’s that thing in your hand?” “It’s a mouse, I answered. She didn’t seem to understand, so I rephrased, “Like a tv remote for the computer.”
9. The hole from where the tree guy recently removed a stump in our yard looked suspiciously like a grave. Now that Joe’s filled it in and I’ve unexpectedly left town, I hope no one gets the wrong idea.
10. Life is like a sand castle. At the end of the day, even the most elaborately built castle all gets washed away.
11. I taught Bryce how to build his first sand castle by filling up a pail up with wet sand and turning it. He was so excited he squealed. And now whenever we play in the sand he says “castle!”
12. Virtual sand castle play HERE.
13. A Beach Devotional, written in August of 2008: The beach is my new religion. Baptized in the ocean’s holy water, I worship at sunset under a big sky. At the shoreline I’m humbled, in the name of the sand, sun, and sea.
More TT’s HERE.

Great 13 once again, Colleen. When I read #5, I had to do a double take – “plane revving its engine” – the Vs look like a W and I thought of you and your love for words and wordplay – did you do that on purpose? Love #10 – life is like a sand castle… profound! and #13 – in the name of the sand, sun, and sea – my kind of religion! Have a great day, and hope your mom is doing better.

As usual I enjoyed reading your T13. I wonder if my kids’ grandparents think the same things you do re. grandparenting.
