13 Seagulls
1. On vacation with my husband on Chincoteague Island, I sat on a surfboard bench in the sand watching two women play scrabble while I waited for an order of crab cakes and French fries at a beach shack. After we ate, no waiters came to take our plates away or usher out, so we rolled out of our Adirondack chairs into swinging hammocks and took naps.
2. Prettiest sight of the week: rows and rows of blooming crepe myrtles along the roadsides on the way to the coast.
3. Smell of the week: citronella.
4. Strangest wake-up call ring tone: Seagulls that seemed to be laughing.
5. There was no point to rinse the chlorine out my bathing suit after swimming in the motel pool because the water in the rooms had chlorine in them too.
6. The wild ponies on Assateague barrier island are horses that have become small as ponies like trees exposed to wind and elements become bonsais.
7. Riding by a flock of Canadian Geese Joe honked the horn. “Why’d you do that?” I asked. “ I wanted to see if they’d honk back,” he answered.
8. It seems that the Atlantic ocean has been conspiring against me this summer. At my mother’s house in Massachusetts it was too cold to swim in and at Assateague Beach it was too rough to get past the breakers without being tossed around like a twig.
9. Have you counted the seagulls in the above picture yet?
10. Speaking of seabirds, how many snowy egrets can you find HERE?
11. Favorite meditation technique as told to author Elizabeth Gilbert by a Balinese medicine man in her book Eat Pray Love: Sit in silence and smile.
12. Our week long vacation also included a Scrabble game and blueberry pie in Bethany Beach, Delaware, where Joe’s mother lives and a Buddhist meditation sangha and a pond of blooming lotus flowers in Portsmouth, Virginia, where we visited a friend.
13. Can you hear the single word I utter in THIS beach dance video?
More playing Thirteen Thursday HERE.

I just saw that movie last night and I LOVED that bit of advice! I’ve been trying successfully to smile more! And I was lucky with the ocean this summer…the week I spent on the Cape we swam in a natural harbor where the water was mostly calm!

Hi Colleen, I’m glad I found the right blog… I get confused when people have several blogs… Duh!!!!
So you live near Floyd or Christiansburg???? I love that area.. That’s where we got on the parkway this time… How neat…
Loved your list… Did you count the seagulls???? I got a different number every time I did it.
Did you ever get to swim?????
Thanks again for following up on me.

If you had stopped by Virginia Beach you could have seen our monarchs. Six have already flown, twelve are in the chrysalis mode and this week the monarchs have gone wild in laying eggs on the milkweed. I have lost count of the caterpillars now making quick work of the milkweed leaves in my makeshift aquarium/ butterfly nursery. Over 15 at least. They flirt with us now as we sit on the deck.
