Castles Made of Sand
There is nothing but sand for miles on Assateague beach, so the people put it to use.
We saw so many sandcastles in the first half mile of walking that I began to think that sand castle building is a contagious culture, sort of like keeping up with the Jones’s.
Or maybe the people on the beach this day were a bunch of ambitious workaholics letting out their inner artists.
Whole families got busy and sometimes named their castle creations. One said Hoffman’s Heaven. This one of a sea turtle said Save the Gulf.
After the sand castle builders finished their creations and the tide began to wear them away, they put themselves to further use by fishing for their suppers.
We started humming Jimi Hendrix’s Castles Made of Sand.

I love all these sand creations. I think there is a competitive feeling to those things. As a child, growing up in a beach town, I saw some amazing ones and never made any of my own. The realization that mine would not be as good held me back. Sad, but true. I wish that I would have reached past my self-imposed inferior feelings and taken held of the fun that I could have had creating.

I love those too. I’ve never seen anything made of sand that was that good – other than on TV or the internet.

Some of them are nearly as good as the ones I saw at The Neptune festival sandcastle competition in Virginia Beach. http://looseleafnotes.com/wp/2007/10/summers-last-call/

NO…did not see the sea shell tree and we only went to the far end of the beach, so I missed any sand castles as well.

Those are lovely. I love making sand castles but have not done it in at least 10 years.
