Hot Off the Thirteen Thursday Press
1. I bought an aromatherapy candle and it stinks, which in this case means it has no smell and is useless for what I had in mind.
2. I wish I could wake up and see my life with new eyes every morning in the same way I do when I come home after being on vacation.
3. Hub bub and hob nob seem closely related and is what my husband was doing over the weekend at an Omega symposium on mindfulness.
4. Nap and nip, a small sleep and small sip, also seem related, and swing could be a mutant plural of the verb wing.
5. Dressed for dinner at Natasha’s restaurant Saturday night, my friend Jayn and I compared who had the dirtiest fingernails. That’s just the way it is in the country.
6. Speaking of vacations, I want to go to the beach to do THIS.
7. Yesterday I found myself wondering what the difference between the limelight and the spotlight is?
8. I grew up in an amusement park beach town and never once rode on the roller coaster, so I surely wouldn’t do THIS.
9. Having school start this week (in the middle of August) is worse than when Christmas decorations go up before Thanksgiving.
10. It seems all I have to do if I’m feeling lonely for blog visitors is to post some pretty photos of butterflies and everyone comes around to look. See HERE.
11. You probably don’t know that more toxic spill came from one recent strip mining refuge impoundment dam break than all the oil that spilled in the Gulf. Mining dam breaks and the toxic effects of mountaintop removal happen in poor counties in Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee, and so, sadly, they don’t get national attention. Read about the community discussion I covered for The Floyd Press HERE.
12. I’m very proud of the arts here in Floyd County and this excellent video on Floyd’s Jacksonville Center for the Arts is HERE.
13. You know you’re in the country when you’re at the local pool and two women under an umbrella are snapping green beans into a large cooler for canning.
Mosey over HERE for more Thirteen Thursdays.

Now I need to find an explanation of what exactly the limelight is. Because I have never really thought about it before. Random!
At least the candle doesn’t actually stink…as in smell bad. That might be worse.

I don’t do rollercoasters, either, so certainly would NOT be riding one naked.
Loved the butterfly pics!

It’s funny you don’t notice your nails until you’re in a restaurant or public place. How I miss the country life. BTW those are gorgeous butterfly photos.
Happy T13!

My fingernails are always dirty in the spring and summer, too. And short—I really don’t know how gardeners can have long fingernails. I do love my country life.
Your butterfuly pictures are lovely.

Loved #13 – wish you could have taken a photo.
August 12th, 2010 10:27 am
My favorite it definitely the last one. You once again make me wish I lived there!
August 12th, 2010 11:48 am
I’m with you on school starting. What ever happened to waiting until after Labor Day?

An aromatherapy candle with no smell would be great for me, because I am allergic to almost every thing with a smell! But I like candles; the flames are very calming.
August 12th, 2010 12:16 pm
With the heat and no airconditioning my house was beginning to smell rife so I figured a vanilla candle would help but it did nothing.
I was too shy to get the green bean snapping shot.
August 12th, 2010 2:57 pm
One of the reasons why I don’t buy aromatherapy candle is b’cos I’m worried they stink..

Love #2! Number #13 made me smile – I can just picture it. 🙂 Happy Thursday!

Roller coasters and i never get along.

Speaking of limelight…. why do people say “meteoric rise to fame” when meteors don’t rise, they fall?
August 12th, 2010 9:40 pm
Re: limelight and spotlight
Both are theater lighting but from different eras. Limelight was produced by burning quicklime (I know, I don’t know what that is either) which produced an intense bright flame and the other is a very bright light produced by electricity.
BTW-thank you for asking. 😉

Not fond of roller coasters or log rides…. I don’t like leaving my stomach up there on the top while plummeting to the bottom!

Join us on September 25-7 in Washington, D.C. at Appalachia Rising, a mass mobilization calling for the abolition of mountaintop removal and surface mining. Appalachia Rising is is a national response to the poisoning of America’s water supply, the destruction of Appalachia’s mountains, head water source streams, and communities through mountaintop removal coal mining. It follows a long history of social action for a just and sustainable Appalachia.
Appalachia Rising strives to unite coalfield residents, grass roots groups, individuals, and national organizations to call for the abolition of mountaintop removal coal mining and demand that America’s water be protected from all forms of surface mining.
Appalachia Rising will consist of two events. First, the weekend conference, Sept. 25-26, Appalachia Rising, Voices from the Mountains will provide an opportunity to build or join the movement for justice in Appalachia through strategy discussions and share knowledge across regional and generational lines. The second event on Monday, Sept.27, is the Appalachia Rising Day of Action which will unify thousands in calling for an end to mountaintop removal and all forms of steep slope surface mining though a vibrant march and rally. An act of dignified non-violent civil disobedience will be possible for those who wish to express themselves by risking arrest.

I started this comment with thoughts on 1-13 but that turned out to be more typing than I want to do. Instead, I’d like to say how much I enjoy reading your blog 🙂
BTW, I”ve never been on a roller coaster. And I don’t think I ever will.

I really like the tunnel, you know the picture at the beginning of your TT!!

I have not seen anyone snapping beans since I was a child! My relatives did it in the summer and i didn’t mind helping sometimes. I like it better when someone else does the work on the fresh veggies, and I buy them shelled and snapped! I wish I could find bags of shelled peas and snapped beans here in our PNW farmer’s markets like I could in GA.
I have missed the fact that you don’t have A/C and cannot imagine how you 2 are alive and free of heat rashes in the unrelenting heat the east coast has had this summer. I would be dead or in the hospital without A/C. Most people in the PNW don’t have it and don’t really need it but 5-7 days a year since summers are mild, but being from the south I would have had a nervous breakdown buying a home without it. We use ours from June-Sept, but it doesn’t come on here like it did in GA when it NEVER went off!

It has been hotter than normal but, being in the mountains, it cools down at night and is cool in the morning. I’ve never wished for air conditioning, not yet that is. If it keeps getter warmer, who knows?

I’ve missed reading your Thursday Thirteen and seeing what is happening in your neck of the woods! Hope all is well. 🙂
