Play Date
We made scrambled eggs with yellow playdough and he cooked them on the play stove. He was wearing a knight’s helmet that was a little too big for his head. I brought him a basket of small red delicious apples. He loaded them up on the back of his dump truck. He liked the story I told him about climbing an apple tree and shaking the branches until the apples fell down to the ground. We acted out the part of an apple hitting me in the head. I turned him into a monkey with a magic wand. He turned me into a giraffe. We read about Old Mother Hubbard’s poor dog that wanted a bone and looked at pictures of robots and space ships on the internet. He cried when I told him not to eat another apple until he finished the first one. I rubbed his back. We pretended we were trains running around in circles on the trampoline. When he held his hands up and said STOP, I froze. He kept his helmet on for a walk in the neighborhood, called his tricycle a motorcycle, and jumped off it when he saw a squirrel scurry up a tree. When a bug scared him in the sandbox, I told him that not all bugs bite. “Maybe I can pat him,” he suggested. After lunch I was happy to type on my laptop using one arm, pecking away with one finger, because my other arm was around him. He cuddled up next to me as I happily typed. My arm fell asleep and so did he.

PS I forgot to mention how much I like his sneakers. Andrew had a pair similar to those when he was 11.
