13 Thursday Face Off
1. Best find on Facebook this week: street art made with plastic bags inflated by hot air rising from subway steam grates HERE.
2. My Asheville Potter Son Josh’s recent Facebook comment read: Studio Stroll. So I sent him THIS link.
3. Cropping pictures in Adobe photo shop is a lot like hemming pants.
4. Searches that landed people on my blog last week: Asheville loose leaf pick up 2010, the eternal sadness from the great beyond, map of Tasmania slang photos, junkyard postcards, think pink virus computer, reason to smile at work, what’s another word for “wet cement,” how to find loose leaf on word, blue sky boys pumpkin headed baby, how to red man loose leaf?
5. Thanksgiving feast tidbit to remember from wastefood.com: every year, through uneaten food, we waste 70 times the amount of oil that gushed into the Gulf of Mexico during the three months of the Deepwater Horizon spill. More HERE.
6. Read Gary Boyd’s Coffee Muses’ account of his visit to Floyd HERE.
7. Variety is the spice of life: On the plane to Boston (where I’m going to be helping to take care of my mom who is getting out of rehab after suffering a stroke), I was surrounded by women my age. One had spiked hair and wore miniature high heel shoe earrings, one in a pink raincoat was doing business over the phone, and another was reading a magazine article on hormone replacement therapy.
8. I was reading Irish columnist’s Nuala O’Faolain’s memoir on midlife, Almost There, which was described by The Irish Times as “unputdownable.”
9. Nuala’s first memoir Are You Somebody? was instrumental in giving me the courage to write my book The Jim and Dan Stories. Her voice was personal, her style was unorthodox, and her story of growing up one of nine with an alcoholic parent hit home.
10. Strangest item found in the Sky Mall catalog: a remote control tarantula.
11. Another good Facebook Find: The Day There Was No News HERE.
12. From the realistic original … to the impressionistic print … My face is a canvas of life un-still … becoming abstract with age ~ From Self-Portrait by Colleen
13. The Mirror ~ Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to understand ourselves. ~Carl Jung

On the bookshelf next to my bed is Nuala O’Faolain’s My Dream of You, a 500-page novel about a woman who returns to Ireland after thirty years away. I hope to read it soon. Are you read it?
I may have to post “The day there was no news” on my blog. What a thought!
November 17th, 2010 11:59 pm
Oops! HAVE you read it?

A remote Tarantula!?! still creeps me out….
Good List!

4. yours are more random than mine: humour in postmodernism, winter cycling in Finland, analyze the poem sorrow moves in wide waves [someone wanting me to do their Niedecker homework] and timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a raindance

#1 is great! Also, I had to giggle at #3 because the comparison is perfect. Happy Thursday!

I have not read Nuala’s novel, preferring non-fiction. I was sad to hear she died of cancer a few years back.
November 18th, 2010 1:33 pm
I read O’Faolain’s “The Story of Chicago May”…it was fascinating!

I hope your mom is doing better now. Take care of yourself too….
Is that a gigantic hula hoop in the picture? If so, you are REALLY good!
November 18th, 2010 8:44 pm
You always have the most intriquing lists!
BTW…I really want one of those remote tarantulas! LOL
Happy TT!

Yes, that’s a hula hoop!
November 19th, 2010 12:34 am
Almost looks like you’re practicing laughter yoga.
November 19th, 2010 12:47 am
‘No News’ would be a welcomed change!
Great post!
November 19th, 2010 1:29 am
Wow, the wasted food statistic was really disturbing!!!
November 19th, 2010 8:26 am
This is where they do Laughter Yoga. We did some right after the hooping and then went to Mickey G’s.

I waiting for a comment on the photo. Cool…how did it get taken?
November 19th, 2010 1:29 pm
It’s a dance studio at the Floyd Fitness Center. Joe and I went for the Laugher Yoga class and got there early, so we were using the hula hoops.
