13 Thursday Star Billing ****
1. You know you’re in Floyd when your husband gets thanked for connecting someone to a day’s work with a bag of homegrown garlic and I get thanked for writing a story about a local dancer with a hula hoop she made.
2. A silver-lining to the bad economy? Interestingly, during the worst of the economic downturn during 2009, carbon emissions, the major cause of climate change according to most scientists, dropped 7 percent, a drop of 453 million tons from the previous year due primarily to less industrial and commercial activity. ~ written by my friend Alwyn Moss for the Roanoke Times. ~ More HERE.
3. I still regret not snapping the picture of two women snapping green beans at Great Oaks Pool this summer.
4. And I’m still thinking about the toilet on the plane from Boston to Charlotte and not being able to find the flusher no matter how hard I looked.
5. You’ve heard of Beyonce’s song “Put a Ring on it?” I call the above sculpture by Floyd artist Charlie Brouwer “Put a Star on it.”
6. We put stars in poems … because we lost one of our parents …who followed two of our brothers … and we like to pretend … that the night sky is a city … and if we give good directions … they might come home … for Thanksgiving this year … Read the rest of this poem HERE.
7. Oxymoron safety card message seen on my flight home to Virginia: If you are sitting in an exit row and you can’t read the small print on this card please tell a crew member. (But how would I know to tell a crew member if I can’t read the print asking if I can read the print?)
8. Under that sentence were even smaller print messages that I also couldn’t read because they weren’t in English!
9. I want to go to the mall to see if THIS could happen to me.
10. But I never want to see THIS.
11. While staying with my conservative mother for the past few weeks, helping her get settled after rehab, I had her watching Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert in the afternoon. All she knew was that it was “comedy” and the only alternative was soaps.
12. Documentary video on Clayspace Coop founded by my son potter son Josh HERE.
13. My current favorite Christmas song HERE.
More participating in 13 Thursday HERE. My past 13 Thursdays are HERE.

Very funny about the Exit Row small print #7.
That does make one scratch the head.
My wife & I recently bought our Christmas tree and had to get a bag that fits over it, well the fine print on the package went as follows: “Tree not Included”

I like #9, but I would like to see dancing instead of singing. They are doing that too in malls.
I like the #13 song too!! xo

I love that sculpture..and your name for it.
#7 is so crazy. The airline industry needs a little common sense. It would go a long way.
I love #11. While I was with my very conservative mother the last few weeks, I did not get her to watch the Daily Show or Colbert Report with me. Sad.

#7 reminded me of the time I got my lineless bifocals and the lady handed me a card to read as a check of the lenses. I handed it back to her and said I couldn’t read a thing on the page…. she had such a shocked and horrified look on her face and was about to take my glasses and head back to the optician to check them when I pointed to the card and said… “It’s in Spanish and I can’t read Spanish, German.. maybe, but not Spanish.”

It was going over her head, especially Stephen Colbert’s character. She hasn’t been doing so well lately and is losing her interest in politics.

What did you think about the TSA procedures?

I never got the full body x-ray thing or the pat down. People were randomly picked for those and had to choose one or the other.
