Tea for a Homebody
Stranded at home on Saturday by a truck with a dead battery, I missed the Christmas parade but got two stories nearly written, marinated the last of last year’s venison round steak, and spent all together too much time photographing a cup of tea illuminated by late afternoon sunlight.
My son Josh and three of his friends from Asheville are in town for hunting. I could tell they came home empty handed (the day’s not over yet) when I heard them in the driveway jokingly debate whether they should pose with the three deer already hanging (two from Joe’s last hunt and one from Josh’s last week).
Joe is at a meeting in Charlottesville. He called a couple of times. Walking to the mailbox, I passed the Redbud we planted in the summer and wondered if it would survive through the winter. With a Christmas card in hand, I watched a dump truck load of firewood drive by and thought how simple the basics of life can be, glad our shed is filled.
Back at home, I googled moon phases and deer hunting, read a few poems from the latest Moonshine, and poured over emails from my sisters about my mom’s stroke recovery (slow), feeling helpless to be so far away.
Tomorrow my social life should pick up. No cabin fever for me. Joe will be home with my car and we’re planning to go to town to see the new Young Actor’s Play Tom Sawyer at the Sun Hall Theater (if the weather holds up). Check out their promo video HERE.

“hanging deer” would make me move away from my own house and husband! i realize you eat the meat, but it upsets me beyond words when we are in GA and encounter hunters with their murdered prizes.

From my point of view, hunting is part of trying to live more sustainably and because I don’t like how they raise and what they do to mass produced meat, fill it with antibiotics, growth hormones etc. Hanging is an age old tradition for aging and making meat more tender. We have an overabundance of deer here and some organic farmers ask us to hunt on their land.
I feel so much better when I include lots of clean eggs, fish and meat in my diet, any other diet is too high in carbohydrates for me and makes my fatigue worse. Beans and rice is good but too high in carbs. Cheese is good but i can’t eat a lot of it. I don’t even tolerate yogurt because the lactose (sugar) makes me feel weak.

Sometimes it’s nice to just be home – whether forced or otherwise. Love the image of the inviting cup of tea!

Send your hunters this way. My husband scared about 12 in our ravine last night!

Send the hunters over toward Hillsville-way…..deer eat every plant I try to have in my lawn….not to mention the danger in driving to town with deer frequently darting from each side of the roadway!!!!

Love the tea photo, Colleen…did you make the cloth underneath?

The Christmas cloth was a gift from my husband’s mother. I’m not so crafty with sewing. That would be my sister.
