Channel 13
1. Posted by blogger Beth Wellington on Facebook: Coal is killing our communities in Appalachia. There MUST be better alternatives. Organized crime provides well-paying jobs, too, but we don’t call it economic development.
2. I’ve been watching American Idol just to watch new judge Steven Tyler. I was never that interested in him or his heavy metal music until I found myself just a couple of yards away and making eye contact with him in a store in 2002. After that I discovered that he lives in the South Shore of Boston (when he’s not in LA), very near where I grew up and in the same town where my sister Sherry now lives. HERE is an account of that citing.
3. I recently became very interested in the girl in the Progressive Insurance commercial, wondering what was under her hair that would make it poof up so much, so I googled “progressive insurance commercial girl” and this is all I got for an explanation: They cut her hair, gave her bangs. They subjected her to two hours of hair and make-up. “They tease my hair, spray it and stick the headband in it,” says Stephanie Courtney, the actress who plays Flo in the commercial.
4. Last week’s highlight: Being invited to afternoon tea by a blog reader who knows I like tea from reading my blog and whose list of ‘things to do’ for New Year included making me a cup!
5. February’s pet peeve: Not being able to read half the off-center, smudged messages on the candy in a box of Valentine hearts.
6. Seems our founding fathers favored government run health care. See HERE.
7. Poetry is cheaper than prozac HERE.
8. Yesterday’s wintry weather: foggy, wet snow and sleet. In other words SLOG.
9. The words spam and scam are related.
10. My favorite part of Obama’s State of the Union speech was the non-partisan seating arrangement. It was also fun to say to Joe, “I bet speaker John Boehner will be crying by the end of the night,” and he was.
11. “When you welcome what you’ve been running from, your life is no longer shaped by trying to avoid it.” ~ Kim Rosen
12. Window shop for a New Year’s Resolution HERE.
13. So, what would you like to mute in your life?
More playing 13 Thursday HERE.

You have me smiling. I think this year’s American Idol crew are much better than previous permutations. Real people with heart.
Your No. 11 has me thinking hard.

I can’t get into AI no matter who they have judging it–listening to people murder songs I like grates on my nerves. Hope you are managing to stay warm. I think I would rather have some of the east coast snow than the Arctic cold Canada keeps sending us.

Happy T13, very informative list, thanks.
January 27th, 2011 6:35 am
I heard yesterday Steven Tyler is the best loved judge on there now!!
January 27th, 2011 8:19 am
Another very interesting 13. Your brain is like thoughts on caffeine. Boehner was holdng back the tears at the very beginning when the President recognized him. I do not mind a person being sensitive, but I think he actually may have a brain tumor! I wonder when was the last time he visited a doctor. I also hate the double standard…if this was a woman she would be ridiculed out of the Congress.

I love number 11
A! judges are definitely an interesting combination
I usually skip the first part and start watching when they go to Hollywood.
Happy T13!

#3 ~ Don’t ask me why I know this, commercials stick in my head, but there’s a hair accessory called “bump its”, whose entire purpose is to aid in the creation of “big hair” like Flo has.

You’re welcome! *grin*
Happy TT,

I watched an episode of AI so far. I think I’ll just wait when they’re finally in Hollywood.

well I’m in the minority. I’m not enamored of Steven Ego Tyler as a judge. He injects his own singing into the performances and is simply obnoxious. nuff said.
I love #11 and #12. And…I agree with Tabor – when Hillary teared up in New Hampshire she was ridiculed and Jesse Jackson Jr. Jr. asked “did she cry for the victims of Hurricane Katrina???” Phhhttt. And I like that someone actually wrote about the Progressive insurance woman. Colleen thanks for your kind words of encouragement and for visiting my blog. It means more than you could know…
Have a beautiful day!

I love Flo from progressive. She cracks me up.
January 27th, 2011 11:42 am
i would mute the sound of the snowplows in the middle of the night. they wake me up every time! but then the hush of the newly fallen snow kind of makes up for it. amen to #1 and i have a good friend named Kim Rosen. i always enjoy your ’13’ posts.
January 27th, 2011 12:49 pm
Your last query is a puzzler. What would I mute? I know what I wouldn’t mute – that’s much easier. But I am not sure I would mute anything, because it is all about life and being alive, and every sound can teach me something, if I will only pay attention to the lesson.
January 27th, 2011 3:51 pm
#4 is so cool! Are you going to write a post about that?
January 27th, 2011 4:30 pm
He is a neighbor who I knew but was glad to have the chance to get to know better AND the tea was delicious. It was high tea at his house in a sunny nook and the conversation was stimulating. How often do we stop and just visit like that? I should be such a generous host, but alas I am not.
January 27th, 2011 6:21 pm
winter slog, yep. those damp daze. hold on, they’ll clear to warm sooner or later.
what would I mute? perhaps not entirely moot but the inner critic could use a bout of laryngitis now and again.
January 27th, 2011 7:04 pm
Another interesting, fun, and educational list.
Right about now I want to mute my 2 y/o grandson, not permanently, just for an hour or so. He has found his way into the terrible twos and he excels at them! LOL.
Happy TT!

A great TT and especially the memory of us together in scituate.
Anyhow, #3 about the progressive insurance lady is wrong…….I saw in a store a bump that you can put in like comb to have your hair look like that on top. I thought of buying it, but then I thought again…….It is fake and I like things that are real!! xo
January 27th, 2011 9:16 pm
Right now I would like to mute the tv, which is being watched at a very loud level by my husband.
I wondered if she was wearing one of those “bump-its” on those commercials.
Tea with a blog reader sounds like lots of fun!
January 27th, 2011 11:24 pm
I love a blog post that can make laugh. I am not an Idol fan. I usually watch the videos on Youtube to avoid the rest. But I do love Steven Tyler. I even named one of my cats after him.
I am also greatly humored by Flo. Her hair may be part of it, but I love her quirkiness.
I may need to follow you 🙂
Oh, and did Dear Abby have an answer for you? 😀
Happy T13!

hello young friend
January 28th, 2011 10:29 am
I want to mute the tinnitus in my ears!
January 29th, 2011 8:04 pm
I always enjoy your Thursday 13, Colleen! You have a delightful mix of humor and wisdom. I like #11—I’ll be giving more thought to that. I was thinking that the weatherman in your picture looks like he’s praying for better weather. Perhaps asking for no more SLOG? 🙂
January 30th, 2011 7:40 am
i want to mute the sound of bass coming from other cars – i don’t want to hear anyone else’s music unless i invite it into my world. thank god it is much more rare here than it was in atlanta. i also would like to mute palin and bachmann. well, i’ll have to rethink that – i might miss some good ops for laughter. ;D
i love your 13s and enjoy the little window they provide into how your mind works!
i had the same bet going with hubs regarding the tangerine speaker. he always comes through.
