13: Get Your Slice
1. I’m the kind of person who likes carrot cake more than chocolate and Motown more than rap.
2. How a poem is like cake: Don’t use a mix or stale ingredients/Don’t look in the oven too much when it’s cooking/or eat too much at one sitting/Don’t over-sweeten or over-stir/A baker and a poet are both concerned with flavor/It’s all about consistency and knowing when it’s done.
3. Fred on Facebook says: “I do my best to keep readers “abreast” of all the most wholesome nuggets of information,” and then he posts a link to the following: The Icecreamists, a trendy ice cream parlor, says its “Baby Gaga” ice cream sold out as soon as it launched Friday. The company paid women who donated their breast milk after a health screening. The milk is then pasteurized and churned together with vanilla pods and lemon zest. The dish, which comes in a martini glass, sells for 14 pounds ($22.50) each.
4. Favorite line at the Oscars this year: “Let the record show I’m not wearing jeans.”
5. That same winner, Charles Ferguson, who won best documentary feature for Inside Job, also said this: “Forgive me, I must start by pointing out that three years after our horrific financial crisis caused by financial fraud, not a single financial executive has gone to jail, and that’s wrong.”
6. Thought for the day: How is dialogue different than discussion and debate different than discourse and why do all these words begin with the letter D?
7. The 39th and final launch of Space Shuttle Discovery has an extended family member on board, my sister Trish’s brother-in-law astronaut Stephen Bowen. Watch Trish and some of Steven’s other family members be interviewed HERE.
8. Stephen went from went the depths of the Arctic Ocean as submarine officer to outer space as a NASA astronaut. He was my escort at Trish’s 1991wedding. Back then, we joked about my being a Peace Activist Bridesmaid to his Naval Officer Groomsman.
9. Number 8 made me think about the George Clooney movie Joe and I saw this weekend called “Up in the Air.”
10. Number 9 reminded me of the dated exclamation “Outasight!” (Just another way to say Farout?)
11. “You’ve heard of the placebo effect, the healing power of positive belief. This is the “nocebo” effect, the flip side, almost its evil twin. And while the self-fulfilling prophecy of negative thinking isn’t nearly as well studied, some scientists say it’s time for doctors to start paying a lot more attention to their patients’ outlook.” More HERE.
12. An excellent video interview with Floyd woodworker Swede McBroom can be viewed HERE. Swede uses wood from local forests that been selectively logged with horses and is currently making a 5 sided council table for an Indian tribe in Wisconsin.
13. Blow out the candles HERE.

I’m with you on Motown over rap but I’ve never been able to get into carrot cake. Red velvet cake on the other hand *smile*
I just watched a show on number 11 and felt so validated!
Happy TT,

You know, that breast milk stuff is rather scary, because you don’t know if the women have been doing drugs, even prescribed ones, and it can leech out in the milk, as studies have shown. I don’t believe I’d be eating that stuff unless there is some kind of control to ensure the quality of what you’re getting.

The Gaga ice cream does NOT sound appealing at all… of course her outlandish costuming makes me “gag” as well… hmm… the word “gag” is part of her name… probably planned.
As for #11.. doctors have seen this for years. I remember two patients with the exact same malignancy….one lady had a bright, positive, serene attitude and did very well with chemo and had a wonderful outcome. She infected others with her smile and outlook. The other, unfortunately, complained constantly and literally decided that all was lost… and sadly, she didn’t respond well at all. The problem is not that this is not recognized, but how do you consistently reverse the negative thinking… it is learned and very deeply ingrained in people. Not a quick fix. Therein lies the rub.

As always a very rich and interesting T13…! I think it is great that Steven is on this last flight! I remember you writing about him in the past….It’s all Historic, but to be on the last flight—Well, that is even more Historic!

I gagged when I read about the breast milk ice cream. Somehow it struck me as intrusive.
I love the metaphor of writers as makers of cakes.

I’m totally with you on #1, Colleen! There’s a great place near us that makes the best homemade carrot cake ever! Rap is crap (which is as close to poetry as I ever get!
