The Mother Language
_______________
I want poetry to be my mother
to be something I can count on
I want it to know its loving firmness
and learn the difference between right and wrong
_______________
I want poetry to be happy
to be what it is
confident poetry
that shares what it knows
and isn’t afraid to disagree
________________
I want poetry to want me
to soften my edges
and fill my pages
________________
I want to claim it as my birthright
I want it to love what I do
to be something I can look up to
and trust it to tell me the truth

Yes! I could have written this myself. All you mention within this wonderful write, I want and dream of. Power to the Poets, I say…and this is why! Now if we could just get the world to follow suit….wouldn’t that be awesome! Happy Open Link Night! 🙂

What a wonderful bunch of ideas! Must be something fine in the mountain air where you live.
And I want poetry to be my daughter dancing in the world with not a care if anyone is watching. I want it to be the rope unwinding the bucket down to the well where the water is always sweet and smells a bit like a sterilized pickle jar.
Hey, see my words you’ve inspired! Thanks.

I want poetry to suckle me and tell me I’m her best boy. I want poetry that’s has something to say in an “I’m from Brooklyn” sorta way. I want poetry as sweet as an apple fritter, as tangy as Mexican hotsauce, as querulous as two Irismen, as real as an autopsy, as amusing as Tina Fey. But hey — you’ve got ME doing it! Forgot to say “as beautiful as the Blue Ridge Mountains!” Thanks for this one.

I want poetry to want me. That stanza was awesome. The entire piece very, very well done. I truly enjoyed this visit and read and liked what you had to say about poetry.

Enjoyed this and I can relate to it. Also love your quote at the top of your blog and I live in VA but am from MA! coincidence… (I’m an artist who writes poetry.)
I also noticed the comment about writing poetry is cheaper than therapy. Ah-yes! (although truly needed therapy should never be avoided.)
