A Fish Story
My soul is like a goldfish
that wants to be seen
but doesn’t like attention
________________
The ocean is too big
the fishbowl too small
I’m afraid to be abandoned
but want to be alone
_________________
In a dream I grow legs
carry the fishbowl outside
where sunlight swallows shadows
and happy cats chase sparrows

This was mostly written after spending a weekend in DC at the Michael Meade workshop http://looseleafnotes.com/wp/2011/05/meeting-michael-meade/ and after the goldfish story he told us.

We’re all full of paradoxes and contradictions–growing legs seems like a very good middle road here. Enjoyed your economy of words, which said everything needed.

A lovely poem that hovers between haiku in feeling, or choka, but is all its own.
