The Fall Collection
I shop for words
as though the dictionary was a catalog
of women’s clothes or shoes
As though the folded over corners
of favorite words on pages
were the edited alliterations
of hemmed skirts
Browsing for the uncommon
I pin down a suitable meaning
unfold a matching pattern
for a custom-made fit
And if I was a model
and my signature was a label
I’d be zipping down a runway
wearing poetry on my sleeve
~ Colleen Redman, fall 2004

This is very nice. Lovely and so tells the tale of all of us who have that passion for words.

I love this! I shop for words, too, in the dictionary and the thesaurus, looking for just the right fit. I really like the last stanza – wearing poetry on your sleeve as you walk down the runway. I can just see that. Peace, Linda

Whatever you’re doing with that dictionary, you word seamstress you — the result is a panache of style and size that fits both art and artist to a tee, Colleen! Paris and Milan will be lucky to have your words sashay in their shows.

Can I ring that up for you, or would you like to shop some more?
Tailor-made or ready-to-wear? Foundation garments to uplift?
Nice to think we might sew our own, when so many of the rags we cover our nakedness with now are crafted in Asian sweatshops! Poetry for a dollar an hour?!?
As you can see, your poem was quite evocative for me…
