It looks like a Pea Pod Caterpillar—I just made that up because that IS what he looks like to me…..I LOVE the way he raises his arms every few seconds–like he was singing a Gospel Hymn…!
When you find out what he is–PLEASE do let us know, my dear!
I just checked out the site…..It is a moth??
I thought for sure it was going to grow up to be a butterfly. You have so many beautiful butterflies in your garden in the spring. xo
It’s the fifth picture down on that site: The white-marked tussock moth caterpillar is one of the best looking in the tussock moth family, the red head, yellow stripes, white tufts and prominent tail all add to its appearance, and the two bright red glands on its back are striking too, like little red lights.
From the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia I write to synthesize what I'm learning at the time, whether it be poetry, a political commentary, or a letter to my family in Hull, Massachusetts, where I'm originally from. Whenever I don't know exactly what it is I'm doing and it borders on wasting my time, I call it research. 'Dear Abby, How can I get rid of freckles?' was my first published piece at the age of 11.

I googled “pea pod caterpillar” and got a lot of cartoon images. Then I searched red head caterpillar and look at the 5th photo! http://www.richard-seaman.com/Arthropods/Usa/Caterpillars/NorthernIllinois/index.html

EEEK one day it will be flying! Probably has gorgeous wings but it surely is odd in appearance as a creeping caterpillar.
