Rosie
A pink tea cozy
around a generous pot
in my children’s
great-grandmother’s kitchen
________________
A silver tea-ball chain
dangling from the rim
like a necklace
on the Queen of England

In a suburb London rowhouse
a bright spot of tea
fills the slightest pause
in every conversation

Basic and black
Robust and aromatic
The water must be hot
like a kiss should be memorable

Affectionately called Rosie
A delicacy and staple
savored and sipped
by royalty and working class

By all those who lust
for the curve of the spout
the steeped and steamed allure
the sound of it pouring
into a waiting cup

It was my first introduction to real tea drinking, in England yet. I was 21 and had never seen a tea cozy before. Kinda looked like the pot was wearing a knitted dress.
