Meet the Girls
On my first day with the new girls in town, I left the gate open when bringing them table scraps and two got out. I only caught one because it couldn’t run, after it tried to get back in the pen and got its head caught in the fence wire. I had to lure the other one back slowly, keeping the gate open enough for it to return, but not so wide as to let the others escape.
They operate as a pack, for the most part, and within one day many of the old hens in the henhouse sayings I remembered hearing over the years came to mind: pecking order, walking on eggshells, don’t keep all your eggs in one basket, and “flew the coop.”
They all seem to hen-peck the white one, which may be why it is more skittish than the rest. So far, they have a big presence in the yard and I have all I can do not to spend my whole day watching their antics. I wonder if the time will come when I can go about my business as they go about theirs.
Five eggs in the first day. Rumpelstiltskin couldn’t have done a better job. Thank you ladies!

they are so cute! hope joe gets the flooring attached soon. it didn’t take long for the raccoon to kill those i mentioned earlier. it made me sick because i was attached to one i called matilda, and it was such a violent murder based on what my neighbor shared RE: the evidence. 🙁

Lovely photos of the girls.
Growing up on a small farm, it was my job to collect the eggs and feed the chickens. I loved calling them. At times we would have 50 to 60 at a time. I didn’t mind feeding them, but was not fond of collecting the eggs after being flogged by a hen a few times. They can be downright mean when they don’t want to get off of the roost.
Happy Sunday!

We got the hens from the woman we were buying fresh eggs from who is now moving away. So we’ve been eating their eggs all along. It’s a kick, like Christmas morning to go out and find eggs in the nest every morning.
