Tea for Two, Lao Tzu?
One of the stops I made on the weekend Floyd Artisan Trail Tour was to potter Sarah McCarthy’s home studio, which by rural standards is in my neighborhood.
Sarah greeted me with open arms, a cookie and lemonade “You gave me the best compliment ever,” she said. It was about three years ago, so I had to be reminded. ‘Your work makes me want to sit with a cup of tea and read Lao Tzu,’ I had said.
I remember thinking her pots conjured a Japanese tea ceremony, the sound of tea pouring, the warmth of it settling in one of her sage green mugs, a light and perfect fit in my hands, making me want to slow down and sip, admire the shape and poetic patterns and how nice they looked next to her husband’s bonsai arrangements.
That was three years ago. Sarah’s new stuff is happy. It makes me want to read Rumi.
Note: Look for more photos of the Floyd Artisan Tour and other local artists in The Floyd Press this week.
