The Pilgrims Landed in Plymouth Because They Ran Out of Beer
That’s what my brother-in-law Nelson told me before he snapped this picture of me with Chief Massasoit in Plymouth. Of course I made him google it to prove it.
For a brief time I lived in Plymouth within walking distance from the rock, but that was more than 30 years ago and I hadn’t been back since.
The site of the Plymouth rock is surrounded by raked sand, making it look like a zen garden. The rock is surrounded by a coliseum of pillars and bars to protect it from tourists who in the past would chip away at it.
The Mayflower II is a reproduction of a late 16th century merchant ship, the same size as the original Mayflower, which landed in Provincetown prior to its historic landing in Plymouth.
This was my sister Sherry’s favorite picture of the day, a scene at Plymouth Harbor.
And this was mine, taken a Billington Sea, a pond and beach where we used to go as children for large family reunions. We met the little girls who owned these Barbie dolls. It was like seeing an early version of ourselves.

Wow! I never knew that about the beer…was it really beer or mead? That would have been more nutritious still. LOVE the Barbie photo…how sweet that it brought you back home in your childhood memories along with the landscape.

I love to zero in on the lovers. And yes, I believe it was a version of beer more like mead and used as a staple.

Those Barbie Dolls look HUGE! Such lovely pictures pf Plymouth and of the rock, too…
And my question is—did they actually expect to be able to buy/get beer from the natives??? LOL! I hope they succeeded…!
