Yurt So Good
1. I took this picture of the new Floydfest Yurt village when I was at the site on Sunday getting some last minute photos of Floydfest ambiance creators for a story I was writing for the local paper.
2. Who better to describe Floydfest, starting today and running through Sunday, than the founders, Kris Hodges and Erika Johnson, speaking at the National Council on the Arts in D.C. this past October? It’s an excellent presentation towards the end of THIS video clip.
3. Mind your P’s and Q’s: The origin of this saying comes from Old English barkeepers shouting at rowdy customers to mind their pints and quarts of beer. – from the Floydfest Lovers Rock program
4. This is what I posted on Facebook after hearing about the recent theater massacre: As someone who grew up in a place where guns designed to kill people are more or less banned and where no one feels that some essential freedom has been lost – on the contrary, freedom from fear is cherished – I often wonder what it will take for Americans to absolutely reject groups like the NRA, all their ideas, and anyone who supports their morbid love of an element of the constitution that is anachronistic, poorly written, unclear, and insanely stupid given modern weaponry. After which, we could actually start to actually do something to save the approximately 30,000 lives lost to gunshot wounds every year, many of them children. ~ Matthew Chapman, writer, director.
5. Conservative Bill Kristol put it this way: “People have a right to handguns and hunting rifles. I don’t think they have a right to semi-automatic, quasi-machine guns that can shoot hundred bullets at a time. And I actually think the Democrats are being foolish as they are being cowardly. I think there is support for some moderate forms of gun control.”
6. I’m making a list and checking it twice. THIS is on it. And so is THIS.
7. Only in Floyd will you find me covering a juried art show for the local paper one weekend and a pro-wrestling event the next.
8. I’ve decided that pro-wrestlers are a cross between stuntmen and clowns.
9. Monsanto biotech agribusiness is like something out Science fiction movie Total Recall when the powers-that-be were selling air to people. Not only is Monsanto intent on controlling the world’s food supply with genetically modified crops and seeds that can not be saved (threatening sustenance farmers all over the world and forcing them to buy seeds from Monsanto every year) they regularly sue farmers who save seeds and are now linked to the coup of Paraguay’s democratically elected president who was resistance against the company’s genetically-modified crop agenda. Read more HERE and HERE.
10. If you forgive the fox for stealing your chickens he will take your sheep. Proverb
11. The Floydfest founders (who live in yurts) call their new yurt village camp “Love Shacks for Glampers.”
12. Jackson Browne’s real name is Clyde. He (a Floydfest headliner performing tonight) was born in Germany and used to be a member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.
13. What would you ask Jackson Browne if you had a chance to ask him one question?

Monsanto is evil.
I would ask Jackson Browne where he finds his inspiration.

Another Great TT! I don’t even want to think about how much I want to see Jackson Browne…..I am totally bummed, Has he performed yet?
I would ask him for a kiss!

Liked what you posted for numbers 4 and 10. Enjoy the Jackson Browne concert–I now have “Lawyers in Love” (my favorite of his) playing in my head. 😉

Nicely done. A good article on weapons control. DRives me nuts that we accept such violence as necessary.

Thanks for the p’s & q’s reference. We were just discussing that! And if I could ask JB anything, it would be what’s up w/him and the women in his life? He writes and performs such beautiful songs (Tender Is the Night springs to mind) but his first wife committed suicide and Darryl Hannah maintains he physically abused her. I love his work so I don’t want to believe that there’s any pattern here.

LOVE those Yurts…Could one live in a Yurt ALL the time?
I so agree with you on Guns, Colleen. I do not understand why anyone can actually buy 6000 rounds of amunition to use in their ‘actually bought’ Assault Rifle….! I do not believe that is what the “founders” had in mind.
The enginerring of FOOD is a very scary concept. I hope I am not around to see that become the norm—if it does become the norm–I won’t be around anyway! OY!

I should add that Floydfest founders Kris and Erika and their two kids live in yurts! Here’s the link to the company that makes the yurts, headed up by Erika’s mom, I believe. http://www.blueridgeyurts.com/

hmmm, what would I ask Jackson Browne…I just don’t know. I cannot believe it’s time for Floyd Fest already. A whole year has gone by???
I so agree with you on #9. I’ve been reading a whole lot about that lately and it is scary. Very scary. happy week to you. have fun at FF.

Interesting list. I especially liked your quotes around gun control. A hot topic, for sure, but one that definitely needs to be on the table for discussion… as does mental health resources in this country and the dire lack thereof in many communities.

“…an element of the constitution that is anachronistic, poorly written, unclear, and insanely stupid given modern [fill in the blank to suit your taste]”
Are you sure you really want to head down that path? I hate the hackneyed term “slippery slope”, but…

It’s a quote. I may have chosen slightly different wording but the overall gist of what was communicated is what I also believe.

Lovely list! I agree with pro-wrestlers as a cross between a stuntman and a clown!
