It’s Great to be Back in Floyd!
It was standing (or dancing) room only at the Floyd Country Store for the visit of Tim Kaine and his wife, Anne Holton, Friday night. Some Friday Night Jamboree attendees wore stickers, announcing their support for the former Virginia governor and Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate. Others weren’t aware that Kaine was scheduled to make an appearance.
Kaine, who most recently served as the Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, arrived during a downpour at approximately 9 p.m. and made his way through the crowd shaking hands, posing for pictures and engaging in conversation.
Anne Holton, a one-time Richmond judge, a first lady of Virginia and the daughter of a Virginia governor, didn’t waste any time joining the dancers and showing off her flatfooting talents. Kaine admitted he wasn’t much of a dancer but later in the evening he gave it a try.
“It’s so great to be back in Floyd,” he said after playing harmonica on stage with the Jugbusters. He accompanied them on a song about a Virginia Tech hokie, which brought cheers from the audience. “Always remember wherever you roam, when you’re a hokie you’re never alone …”
After two numbers, Kaine briefly addressed the crowd about the Senate race, saying, “The key is getting people to work together. I’ve learned how to do it and I want to do it. I hope I have a chance to do it again for the commonwealth.”
Noting the last 90 days of a 19 month full-time campaign, he said, “My wife and I think this is going to be our favorite night.” Judging from the hand clapping and foot stomping to the sounds of old-time music, many in the room agreed.
