Here We Are Now in Floyd Virginia
“Here we are now in Floyd Virginia” sang Leah Smith, who, with her sister Chloe, heads up the conscious raising musical act of Rising Appalachia.
The sisters and their band (a past Floydfest favorite) performed at Dogtown’s Sun Hall Friday night to an animated crowd of fans, including a line of bouncing babies, which you can see in the video below. It was a CD release party for the band’s new CD called Filthy Dirty South
I was drawn like a moth to Bryan Bailey’s black light, which he uses to illuminate his live show paintings done with glow in the dark neon colors. In the video clip below he was painting to the musician who opened for Rising Appalachia, incorporating the vibe of the crowd and the music into his psychedelic work.
It was fun to see how it developed over the course of the night. Watch Bryan (and his image in the mirror) paint below.

Heading out to my son’s CD release party in a few weeks in Arlington, VA. I think it is his third or fourth. Maybe he should play in Floyd?

Have him check with the Dogtown Roadhouse. Their Sun Music Hall is an excellent venue.

As always, I am impressed with the amount of creativity that is a constant in Floyd! Music, Painting, Pottery, Poetry, etc., etc., etc…..
HOORAY for Floyd and HOORAY for all the “artists”!
Thanks for sharing, Colleen.

Am speechless.
I spent a week bouncing around in your neck woods many many moons ago. Most of your posts remind me of that time. I seen and felt much back then but I missed a fair bit as well. This kinda fills in the gaps, well at least a bit.
