13: And So It Begins
1. And so it begins: the wigs and witches, the glitter and gore.
2. Best line seen on Facebook last week on the end of the government shut-down, posted by my Facebook friend Rick: I don’t belong to any political party, but it strikes me that something is wrong when a group that claims to be the “party of fiscal responsibility” just wasted 24 billion dollars of taxpayer money pitching a hissy-fit for nothing.
3. Also this from my Dharmacratic friend Will: The bottom line is a circle.
4. So far as I can remember I’ve been a cowgirl, a mime, a cat, a gypsy, Huck Finn, a Blues Brother and Yoko Ono on Halloween, but never a witch. Mostly I just do get-ups. The one posted here (which is of a window reflection) is hard to appreciate when you can’t see my white go-go boots.
5. No matter where I go, I carry my camera at my hip the way a cowboy carries a gun. And we both shoot.
6. I have a blog post brewing called “Why I Love Obamacare,” but before I write it I have to see if I actually do love it.
7. Since my husband and I buy our own insurance (are at the age when we think it’s important to have), and since we make a modest income, we are perfect candidates for getting a break in rate premiums. I went to healthcare.org website and didn’t have too much trouble filling out the application form. I received an application ID and notice that we are eligible for an affordable rate, but I haven’t been able to buy a policy yet because the website stopped working, so time will tell.
8. “Pumpkin Carbon,” that what my 3-year old grandson Liam calls pumpkin carving.
9. When my grandsons first became excited about the movie Despicable Me 2 and were telling me about it, they were saying “Aspicable Me 2, and I was nervous about it, thinking they might have meant THIS.
10. I just found out there’s a name for lyrics that are easy to mishear, like “excuse me while I kiss this guy,” “we all live in a jealous of marine” or “the girl with colitis goes by.” It’s called mondegreen lyrics.
11. I use to mishear my catechism prayers, thinking Hail Mary full of grace was Hail Mary full of grapes. It seemed logical to me that I thought that since a following line said, blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
12. For some reason I find it easier to talk about God when I say it like this: Gawd. That’s the way we do it in Boston.
13. I still have two more Halloween Costume parties to dress up for. This should be fun.

I carry my camera like a gun too. Very comfortable!
#2 shaking head. I’m glad I watched the mess from afar.

He mis-heard the lyrics, so they killed him and buried him mondegreen.

Can’t wait to see your costumes, my dear…And your Little Grand Guys, too..
On hearing things wrong—-for years I thought the line was “Memories, LIKE the corners of my mind….” It didn’t even make sense!!! ( “The Way We Were” )….it is “LIGHT” the corners of my mind…….
I hope they get the Website straightened out—this is such fodder for the Republican Party….The Tea Party is like the rise of The Nazi’s…..very very scary.

I like that picture of you in that mask, but am indeed sorry I can’t see the go-go boots. When I was about 6 that was all I wanted for Christmas, go-go boots, but I didn’t get them. My mother said I was too young.

Great congregation of ideas. Have been to so few Halloween parties, I cannot remember what I dressed up as.

Dang, I want to see the white go-go boots.

On second though, I must confess they are really more like granny boots, but added a go go boot look to the outfit and I hope knowing that doesn’t bust anyone’s bubble.

You know … I can honestly say I have never been to a Halloween party before. I know I know … I’m missing out. I would LOVE to go to one though. I think the last time I wore a costume was the last time I went trick-or-treating as a child. LOL.

1. A fun time of the year.
2. idiots
3. Or a square.
4. My best costume was a pumpkin head lady.
5. I shoot from the hip too.
6. I have faith – so far.
7. A bad start.
8. That kid is so CUTE.
10. I just learned that when my kids, Beth and Molly (Joy) were little, they thought that the lyrics to Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da Lyrics – by The Beatles was actually saying “With a couple of kids running in the yard of Desmond and Molly Joy. That’s funnier still now that Molly just named her first child Desmond. I’m not sure if that is a proper mondegreen, but I’d agree with the lyrics that “life goes on” and in ways we never dreamed of.
11. I’m thinking of Sherry when she thought a windshield was a wind chill. It makes sense too since the glass does cut down on the wind chill.
12. Holy Mary mother of Gawd.
13. And so it begins.

I just looked up Obladi Oblada to find out the real lyrics and then became interested in the song and found this on wikipedia: “Desmond has a barrow in the market-place” was a reference to the first internationally-renowned Jamaican ska and reggae performer Desmond Dekker who had just had a successful tour of the UK. The tag line “ob-la-di, ob-la-da, life goes on, bra” was an expression used by Nigerian conga player Jimmy Scott-Emuakpor, an acquaintance of McCartney.
