A Wednesday Night Jamboree
The Floyd Country Store was one of the filming locations of Geographically Desirable, a romantic comedy that was recently filmed in Floyd by Nextnik Films. A recreation of the Friday Night Jamboree was enacted for the film last Wednesday evening with close to 100 local background actors participating in the shoot.
A mix of generations was represented in the dance scenes, with lead actors from the Washington D.C. area flat footing in the mix. Some regular jamboree goers were in attendance as extras, including Janet Turner who regularly performs on the Country Store stage. Old time music was provided by Jenny and Mac Traynham, Joe DeJarnette and George Slusher.
The professional actors and crew members interacted and posed with locals in between takes. “Thank you all for coming out on a Wednesday night for a fake jamboree,” film director Mike Kravinsky joked at the end of the night’s filming.
“I really enjoyed it,” said Alzora Wood, a Country Store employee who took part in the shoot. Some extras were planning on going to Dogtown Roadhouse the following night for more filming. Other filming locations in Floyd included Oddfella’s Cantina, Republic of Floyd and New Mountain Mercantile, as well as downtown street scenes.
“Mike Kravinsky and his crew have been amazing to work with and we are hopeful that they will shoot more films in Floyd,” said Jason Gallimore, who was acting as one of the film’s producers for the Floyd shoots. Other scenes in the movie are being shot in the Washington D.C. area.
Gallimore expressed his gratitude to local businesses and to the people of Floyd for being so supportive. “A premiere will likely be held at Chantilly Farm when the film is finished,” he said.
On Saturday Kravinsky posted a note on Facebook thanking everyone for their hospitability, praising the extras, the great locations and even the good weather. “We’ll come back to Floyd mid next year so you can watch our completed film. Until then, I can only say again, Thank You!” he wrote.
Post notes: The above first appeared in the October 17th issue of The Floyd Press with a larger selection of photos. Photo # 4 shows Billy and Joan Richards, Jamboree regulars who acted as film extras in dance scenes, with the film’s lead actors Blair Bowers and Andrew Nicols. Photo # 5 is of Jason Gallimore (left), jamboree regular Iva Leo Weddle, and film director/writer Mike Kravinsky. Read more about the first day of film shooting at Floyd’s Oddfella’s Cantina HERE. And HERE is a video clip of the Jamboree recreation. I got some good dance scenes but can’t post them because they are shoots that will be in the actual movie.

Floyd is the happening place these days, it seems. I had friends come by a month ago and they spent the night there on their way down south.
