Floyd PFLAG Halloween Fundraiser

Skeletons, super heroes and rainbow-wigged characters got an early start to Halloween. The local chapter of PFLAG, a national support, education and advocacy organization, held a Halloween Costume fundraiser at Dogtown Roadhouse/Winter Sun Hall Saturday night, October 19th.
The Floyd PFLAG (Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) group is raising money for an education scholarship fund, which will be awarded to a graduating senior who has shown leadership in cultivating safety and respect for others.
Spirits were high and many attendees took to the dance floor, moving to the music provided by volunteer musicians from Time is Art (pictured above), The Off Brand band (pictured below with Rose Cherrix and Jim Best) and Sharayah Spears (pictured in the last photo). The event featured a chance raffle table of donated items, a costume contest and a colorful laser light show, provided by Fantasy Lighting and Staging, that included an intermittent smoky mist.
PFLAG member Rose Cherrix awarded fellow member Jim Best with the first annual VIP award. The award was a hand engraved wooden plaque created and donated by John Lemon in honor of Best’s dedicated service. Members of Roanoke’s Indie band, The Off Brand are also pictured.
Best said that he and fellow PFLAG member Dianne Maughan (pictured above) are headed to the PFLAG Conference in WashingtonD.C. next week, where they will be lobbying legislators to support 10 legislative bills, including the SSIA (Safe School Improvement Act), and ENDA (Employment Non-Discrimination Act).
Nearly $600 was raised, Cherrix reported the following day. “It was awesome,” she said.

The hills down yonder and over d’rrr are alive with the sound of music, sound of living, but more importantly, alive with the sound of soundness. It is a place of goodness, you have chosen to hang your chapeau.
Though for some reason I’m humming the Guess Who ‘American Woman’ the jazzy version.
