The Floyd Hall of Fame
It seems I’m running out of fingers to count the number of people in our community who have passed away this year, all at ages where death is not expected. It seems a door that was left ajar is now open and some of the best in Floyd community are walking through. John Dancing Crow came to Floyd as Wounded Crow. He was a soapstone carver, jewelry artist and a traditional song carrier of Cherokee descent.
Crow was my neighbor on and at more than one occasion and location. He lived humbly and was always willing to share his native and artistic ways. Many in Floyd had just seen him at the Friday night Floyd Artisan’s Market. In 2009 I ran into him on the Blue Ridge Parkway, where I often go to watch the sunset. He was with his daughter and was playing the flute. “Great acoustics,” I remember saying to him. With camera in hand, waiting to capture the sunset, I took these two photos and couple of video clips. I think they really capture Crow’s spirit and should be framed for the Floyd Hall of Fame.

I remember once at the Black Mtn Fest. we were set up side by side selling our wares. I had to leave for a few minutes and asked Crow if he could keep an eye on my table while I was gone. He replied “I only have 1 good eye.”

So very sad, Colleen—Floyd is certainly having it’s share of meaningful losses lately….And here is another special person, gone….I’m so very sorry, my dear….I loved the way he played Harmony on that wonderful instrument of his….
