BMHS Students Give Independent Studies Presentations
Last week Blue Mountain High School students gave their end of the semester Independent Studies presentations.
The presentations ranged from a report on a muffin baking business to a presentation on Ancient Egypt, complete with a handmade paper mache mummy and pyramid.
A report on local recycling efforts that included a description of an organized clean-up day, and a service dog business that included the construction of a web page design were two of the twelve presentations.
Three students chose independent studies in the music field and incorporated performances in their presentations.
One gave a history of saxophone and another demonstrated the new scales he learned on his guitar through the performance of two blues songs. A third student played the jazz trumpet and spoke of being introduced to local jazz musicians and being invited to rehearse and perform with them.
An 8th grade student designed a remote control model airplane. Using a digital blue print, he was able to produce a wing with a 3D printer, which he passed around to be examined.
Another student learned video editing to produce a lyric music video that was posted on youtube and watched by the classroom of peers and teachers. Others explored photography and camera skills, with one demonstrating the use of time lapse photography.
Most presentations incorporated multi media and several students used Presi, a software program, used for presenting ideas on a virtual canvas, that is a step above power point.
The students, age 13 to 17, also shared why they chose the project they did, what competencies it involved and what impact it had. Part of the self studies presentations involved self-evaluation and the evaluation of presentations made by fellow students.
