Waiting to Be Saved
On a lazy Sunday
made for folksingers
for beatniks and people
that read Carl Sagan
I’m fishing for lines
in Pandora’s box
A pink smartphone
set on Cupid’s station
I’m looking for wells
to throw pennies into
or take them out
I’m waiting for the part
where the harmonica breaks in
and Leonard Cohen meets Suzanne
The part where Yoko Ono
tapes the sound of snow falling
and Richard Brautigan writes his poem
the one where he wakes
the fly on his napkin
so he can clean his classes
and watch a pretty girl
I’m waiting for words that sink in
and the silence between them
For the blues guitar solo
that pierces like an arrow
and makes me stand up
for everything true

I like waiting for the words that sink in and the silence between them. Sometimes, I think, it is in the silences a person finds true meaning. And the idea of being able to stand up for everything true resonates….I think Leonard Cohen did just that.

I am especially drawn to the silences between words because that is where understanding happens. Your poem has so many good lines…I love those lazy beatnik sundays.

Lots of cleverly observed moments in there, and all with a nostalgic feel to it. And I think I know what you mean by people who read Carl Sagan…

Love your reflections of a Sunday. I enjoyed and giggled at the line where the man wakes the fly and cleans his glasses so he can look at a pretty girl. Enjoyable read.
