I Really Don’t Know How to Explain My Birthday
Acupuncture, carrot cake, putt putt golf and ballroom dancing, all against the backdrop of garden dirt-lined fingers tapping at the keyboard, a browser that kept wanting to crash, a black snake in the chicken coop and a mystery culprit that kept emptying the birdfeeder of every last drop of seed.
I really don’t know how to explain my birthday weekend. We ate out three times. I got a free dessert at the new Bent Mountain Bistro (that I haven’t stopped raving about) because the draught beer spout was clogged and I couldn’t order the Get Bent IPA. The night before, at the Artist’s Table, a stranger approached me while I was fantasizing about strawberry cheesecake at the dessert case. “Are you married to that man?” she asked.
“What? The one I’m sitting with? Yes, he’s my husband,” I answered, not trying to hide my bewilderment. It seems that the woman and Joe and I were separated only by a partition (table height) and a plant, which is how she overheard the content of our dinner conversation. She was inspired by it and didn’t think we sounded like a typical married couple, and especially not one that has been together for 25 years, she said.
“You didn’t hear the part where I said to him (who was trying to make a point), ‘Stop pointing your fork at me!”’ I joked, and then gave her a hug.
After that exchange, I felt a little self-conscious, and Joe and I spent the rest of the evening reviewing what we talked about. It might have been about karma, the collective psyche, our separate creative projects and stated appreciation of each other, along with the news of the day.
There was so much going on in Floyd this weekend. We didn’t make it to the Tiny House Tour or my fellow May 17th birthday friend Luke’s party. We missed all but the last 20 minutes of our grandson Bryce’s Putt Putt Golf birthday party because I had the time wrong. But we did make it to the community concert in celebration of the songs of the late Pete Seeger, which turned out to be a memorable highlight.
Acupuncture? That was the treatment treat in between all the rest and the thing that probably helped me keep going into Sunday. Joe is certified to do auricular (ear) acupuncture and he’s been periodically giving me treatments for wellness support. I have a favorite CD with music and birdsong that helps me zone out. The music takes me on a journey, as if a window to my childhood home opens to a perfect and innocent day. The birds come alive in my mind and their song always brings tears to my eyes.
We never did end up doing the ballroom dancing at Zephyr Farm on Sunday as planned, but we did enjoy a feast of flavors, good conversation and a private concert of original music from a well-loved farm member.
There was also an avoided argument at the dinner table about how old I really am.

A Very Happy Belated Birthday, dear Colleen…..It sounds like a Jam packed weekend….! The Tribute to Pete Seeger’s music sounds right up my alley….I loved him! And was lucky enough to see him in concert back in 1963……I love that that woman didn’t think you and Joe were married because of your lively conversation…lol! Floyd has more happening in it than Los Angeles!

Liam (3) recently asked me if I was old. I told him yes, I’m a little bit old. He also says, “I’m a big boy AND a little boy. I’m both.”
