Standing Room Only for Dylan Tribute
– The following first appeared in The Floyd Press on March 19, 2015.
It was standing room only for the Dose of Dylan Tribute event at the Floyd Country Store Saturday Night. Host performers, The Souvenirs, presented two sets of Dylan tunes and welcomed guest artists on stage.
This was the second time the group – Dave Fason, Rob Neukirch, David Cannaday and Rusty May – presented an evening of song in tribute to an
iconic songwriter musician. In March 2015 they hosted and performed Pure Prine. Fason, formerly of Windfall and owner of the Windfall recording
studio, said the group will be performing John Prine songs, as well as a Dose of Dylan revisited at upcoming Americana Afternoons, held at The Floyd Country Store Saturdays at noon.
Luke (Thomas) and Abby (Bowen), who recently appeared on Daytime Blue Ridge / WSLS 10 to promote the Dylan event, performed Make You Feel My Love, which featured Abby’s lead vocals, and Lay Lady Lay. Luke, a member of Spoon Fight, sang All Along the Watchtower. The couple was accompanied by violinist Laurel Brooke. Brooke, a member of the Roanoke Youth Symphony Orchestra, also accompanied other performing musicians throughout the evening.
Rocky Mount musicians Seph (Custer) and TK (Wimmer) joined the Floyd cast of performers with an upbeat rendition of Subterranean Blues. Seph, with TK on percussion, also performed Like a Rolling Stone and Tangled Up in Blue. He gave a shout out to his mother from the stage and grinned when he told the audience, “She didn’t think I’d say that.”
Big Mama Joy led a rousing sing-along to Everybody Must Get Stoned and presented a one-man-band foot drum that she made out of found items.
Musician John Wilson joined the finale all star sing-along, which included a rendition of Knocking on Heaven’s Door. Some of the songs the Souvenirs performed together were Senor, I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight and Mr.
Tambourine Man.
A couple visiting from Fancy Gap happily sang along from their front row seats. Sitting next to them was a man wearing a wig and sunglasses, who was introduced by Neukirch during the show as “Bob Dylan.” The Dylan impersonator stood and helped the crowd sing to Big Mama Joy, who was celebrating her birthday.
The standing room only Dose of Dylan show ended with a standing ovation. “We’ll still be singing this one 200 years from now,” Neukirch said as he introduced the final number, Blowing in the Wind.
